Hi,

just about to pull the plug on a set of front disks for my 1.9..

europarts have brembos on offer for £40 for a pair

whats the score with 1.9 front brake disks i see that they are solid and 12mm thick 286mm diameter. the 2.8 front disks are 22mm thick vented and 286mm diameter.

i assume i need 2.8 calipers to use the 2.8 disks as they are thicker but same diameter.. is that correct ?

thanks Al.

The 1.9L Z3 uses solid 286 x 12 mm disks and a 54/12 caliper. The common upgrade for the 1.9L Z3 is to fit facelift front brakes from a 2.0L or 2.2L Z3 by fitting:

· Brake disk 286 x 22 mm (ventilated), part number 34116864060

· Calipers 54/22, part numbers 34116758113 and 34116758114

· Caliper carrier, part number 34106758104

Note: The front calipers piston size has not changed so they will not interfere with the master cylinder to caliper hydraulic design.

I think that @Faheem has done this mod on his 1.9 Al.

By standard the 1.9 came with solid front discs but think that every 6 cylinder model in the lineup came with vented front discs.

I changed the calipers, cariers and front discs on my 1.9 swapping them for the 2.8 equivalent. Think that a few of the guys on the forum have done this and it does improve braking performance somewhat.

I also went for EBC redstuff pads and drilled and grooved discs, although if doing this again I think I would prefer standard discs (not drilled or grooved, as these are quite noisy and don't add much, other than looks, for day to day driving).

Check our AUTODOC (germans site) like ECP but slightly cheaper and then sometimes much cheaper if they run an additional promo.

Just got calipers there for much less than here.

Re discs, I agree with @Faheem about EBC. I’m just about to bin a set of EBC discs (they were the standard type but apparently work ‘better’ with their pads) and replace with Brembo after 10k miles. One has warped and they were much more money than Brembo. Costly mistake but you learn (this was on a much heavier car 313mm disc but still I’ve never had an issue like this before, even on the Z that gets a good brake work out).

I’ve used their yellow stuff pads which I’ve been happy with but my mechanic who has fast (very very fast turbo cars) will never fit anything EBC to his car..

thanks all for the swift replies.. i ordered a set of standard solid disks (brembo) to go with my standard calipers... and a set of eicher brake pads...

t.b.h anything has got to be better than the disks i had on the car i didnt realise how bad they were at 9mm thick i should have changed them ages ago..the inners of the disks were real bad too only a small contact patch where the pads were touching the disk...

it did cross my mind to rip off the calipers off my 2.8 and put them on my 1.9. as thats not road worthy yet.. and get the bigger disks...

So the kits that are sold off Amazon for my 1.9L will not fit (direct bolt on)?
I have solid rotors and the listing says they will?
