Everyone, this is Binky*! Only had her for 2 years and she was hardly on the road. But when she was it was :x

It was a classic eBay purchase. Believed the advert, and for various time constraints ended up blind bidding. It made it 9 miles before the brakes bound on. The electrics were shot. On the whole it was in fantastic condition, just didn't run that often.

My family have had a bit of history with early Landies. The day after I was born, I was chucked in a carry cot in the back of this, and taken on holiday to Scotland...

Hi Gary, in the early 80's I owned one as well, 1966 SWB, great fun down the beach over here.
I bought it from a chap who ran a wind surfing business in Zandvoort, famous for its race track that hosted F1 (Dutch F1 GP) up until 1986.

He had resprayed it in a dark red BMW metallic paint and replaced the front seats with seats from a truck, very comfortable and the huge heater, under the middle of the 'dashboard' was excellent.
I always had a big hammer with me in the Land Rover, as more often than not I would have to give the starter motor a good whack to enable me to become mobile.
I could not lock the rear door, so always reversed parked up against a wall or something.
At one point, someone did try to half inch it, via the rear door but obviously could not get their head around the starter button, all the rage now.

Below pic is not of my Land Rover, as I seem to have lost a few things since moving house, including, believe it or not, underpants. :-\
But its almost identical, except for the very rare roof rack that I would love to of had.

I can remember all the threads on the Series II forum about starter motors. Almost a service consumable item if I remember correctly. Mine always started even after leaving it for three months over winter. Never like driving it in winter because of the condensation from the roof dripping down my neck.

Still made me smile like a loony when I drove it. It's passed hands a couple of times now, and I know the guy who has it now. Uses it daily, which isn't bad for a near 50 year old car.

mmmmmmmLand-Rovers!! I have had 4 to-date the oldest and most fun was a series 1 80",cost me £60! so did not matter if it was bumped or scraped,no problem trying to take it anywere.
The guy I bought it off used it to pull boats out of the Conwy river,he said the gearbox was knackerd it jumped out of gear on the over-run. I took out the box replaced a couple of bearings and sleeves, no more trouble.This was back in the late sixties,a series 1 today would cost a bomb.

I bought a new Land-Rover series 2 SWB diesel in 1960 and in 1962 2 mates and I drove it overland to Singapore then on to Australia and New Zealand.I sold it in NZ in 1964 for more than I paid for it new in the UK, it was then shipped out to Norfolk Island were it could still be running,would love to know.

Wow, that must have been one hell of a road trip, I would love to hear more about that. B-)

I love Land Rovers, currently on my fifth which is a heavily modified Discovery / defender mishmash. Like the Zed, it doesn't get used enough, but justifies its keep by providing some great off road days and towing the odd coach when needed (which means that work pays for the insurance!)

We too have a Landrover, In fact we have had various Landrovers over the past 30 years. Our first was a 1953 Series 1 80inch, We then had an 86inch Series 1 Early Station Wagon and a 88inch Series 1. Later we acquired two early Range Rovers, Lovely cars very capable off road, will pass anything except a petrol station. We then progressed to 2 Discoveries, a 200tdi and a 300tdi. Recently we owned a 90 Defender which I dropped a 200tdi Discovery Engine in. We now have a Td5 Defender.
Although we love landrovers, they are just a tool for get us where we want to go. Whereas the Z3 is a passion, a car that puts a smile on your face when your feeling down.

I've had some great fun in Rovers, but I can also remember the bad points - broken half shafts and people putting the handbrake on before stopping were the worst two. Done a few chassis changes as well. Quite easy when you have the kit.

Funniest thing I ever saw was when an Land Rover ambulance was being escorted by a police 820. The copper stopped for the lights, the Rover didn't. It ended up with its front wheels in the police cars back seat .

This was my other experience of Land Rovers. The Freelander TD4!

Now this was a car to hate... It was a nightmare mechanically, but when it worked it was a nice enough drive.

You can't beat a bit of off roading. Mine is here, also modded a fair bit, 300Tdi County. I was interested, what's your involvement with coaches? I run a coach company up here in Hamilton.

For my sins, I run the Coaching arm of First Group in Wales and the West. I thought it was only Mr Parks that operated coaches in Hamilton!

Love the 90, it looks an absolute beast.
