2000 BMW Z3 door sill replacement

Hello everyone,

Quick question.

The below image is my driver side. On the passnager side that portion is peeling off. Can you buy that "roadster" metalish piece or do you have to replace the entire black door sill?

If so what is the part number using the link below or where do you suggest I purchase it.

Not sure if still available from BMW or not but you can buy second hand ones off eBay/breakers which may or may not be in better condition. I'd be tempted to try and stick the current one if you can find something strong enough.

Hey, according to this it looks to me that you have to replace the entire door sill.

I think @FRANKIE in New Joissy is the closest member and has tackled a lot of different challenges on his Zeds himself so he may be up for a road trip @Xcution! A wee bit far for me though I'd love to help!! JIM

I had the same problem with mine. I replaced the whole thing, buying from the local BMW dealer. Just make sure you buy some new clips because you won't do it without breaking a few. If I can blunder through it, anyone can. Good luck. Phil

Sill removal and rust prevention


Jack up the car and place on axle stands
Remove wheels
remove rear arch liner

Remove kick pannel trim and door rubber

remove kick pannel plastic plug

Remove kick pannel by lifting up

You may brake some plastic clips so remove broken clips from holes

Remove front arch liner

Remove screw from front arch, top front of sill (use 10mm ratchet)

Remove three screws for the small side pannel, detatch side repeater and remove

Remove screws from under the sill

Remove screw from rear arch

Remove small plastic trim from inside door and remove bolts that hold rear arch to allow better access for the screw behind it

Remove finnal bolts from top of the sill that were under the kick pannel and remove sill

Clean up box section and check for rust

Treat areas with rust with your prefered products

I used zinc 182 primer, clear waxoyl spray for inside box sections and original waxoyl underseal

Sand down any rust found on the sill and treat with your desired products

Now just reverse the removal process and replace the sill, Job done :-bd

Do you really have to remove the wheels? I saw one where they just took off the top section of the sills. Then the sills themselves. Then put everything back or am I missing something?

No need to remove the wheels if you are just replacing the roadster trim pieces. Gentle levering will do it.

A DIY won't necessarily help as it's in the action of removing it not what you remove.

A sharp intake of breath and a flick of the wrist are needed. You'll think you're damaging something but it's unlikely you will.

The inner trim piece is very firmly attached with some very solid clips. You must be brave with that one.

Then lift the rubber door seal in that area.

Then 'peel' back the threshold trim gently but smartly from the front.

You won't break any clips on the inner piece. You probably will on the outer.

The drivers trim is in nice condition. If the passenger side is the same why not just glue it. These are expensive from a dealer. And difficult to find on a condition as good as your's secondhand.

I brought a replacement pair for mine.
My originals where all chrome and corroded, my new ones are like yours they came from a breaker state side in nearly perfect condition, so you may find them as i did on ebay.
