Hey All, New here…. I’m about to convert an E85 to an E86. with targa top! Best of both worlds or naff idea?… hoping to pick your brains along the way!
Best

Would it not be easier to start with an E86 and cut the roof? 😀 Mind you, I would much rather see an E85 being mutilated.

I once saw a picture of a Mk3 Triumph Spitfire where the detachable hard top had been targa-topped. It looked awesome

Absolutely!! However, I’m not sure i could cut an E86 🤣… my E85 had the old roof motor drowning situation and I thought, do i change the motor or have some fun! 🤷🏼‍♂️

The latter! :)
How are you going to fashion a rear piece with targa panels, unless you cannibalise an E86?

Moving the roof motor on the E85 to the boot would be a lot simpler and has been done thousands of times

How do you think I will do it? … And yes, roof motor is a more simple job, “simple” being the operative word 😆.. just a bit of fun, but everyone gets their opinion… I did ask 😉
Have you any cool projects on the go or sticking to the simple stuff?

I did look into having this done to my coupe, reached out to a 3 company's a few years ago but all didn't want to on the grounds of making it water tight.

It's hard enough keeping water out of a factory spec Z4 (or Z3 for that matter), let alone an 'altered' one! ;)
Never a truer word spoken 🤣… all I read is about coupe owners with water getting in!… maybe i can stretch to a large tarp or tubes of silicone in strategic areas 🤣…. I have all the parts needed from Ebay ready for the project…I’m waiting for the Spring to make a start ☀

There’s been lot of preparation for the project, it is a bit of a concern i agree, but that’s part of the fun i guess… plus it will be one of one when finished 👍🏻

I'm curious how you will be compensating for the lack of a roof.

Is the convertible body the same as the coupe below the roofline, and the roof just adds extra (but unneccessary) strength? Or are you going to base it on a convertible and weld on the rear half of a coupe roof? Or are you going to strengthen a coupe floor to make it as strong as a convertible floor?

A jigsaw to part 6 - job done =))

Scratch that - I just read that you are starting fom a convertible. Personally, that would be the way that I would go. It would seem harder to do, but it avoids the problem of having to deal with part 7, and different doors.

I'm looking forward to this. Keep us posted with your progress.

It's worth a thread in the Rebody section, even though it's not strictly a rebody.
I will look into doing that, I’m new on here so getting used to the site… I’ve even thought about a YouTube channel but I don’t really do that type of thing 🥴… I will take photos of each part of the project and maybe post a montage start to finish…
