Aircon advice E85 with inpa

Afternoon all

trying to get to the bottom of why my aircon isn’t functioning

it’s been regassed, clutch looks like it works as it should when engine running

ran inpa courtesy of mark plant’ laptop- here is what it shows

anyone got any advice as I don’t know what’s good or bad

A common problem with the AC is the electric cooling fan on the radiator. It needs to be running/working for the AC to kick in.

1. The electric cooling fan should start and run for a few seconds every time the engine is started. The easy check.
2. With INPA, look in the DME for fault codes related to the cooling fan.
3. With INPA, look in the DME, you can test the cooling fan in the "Activation" section. The hard check.
4. With INPA, look in the DMW, you will see digital indicators for the AC readiness and if the AC clutch has been turned on.

fan deffo works as I did the activation test on it

will recheck for faultcodes on it

I’ve scanned for codes in cooling fan etc- nothing showing

i think it’s cooling but not very well when running

Have you had a thermometer in the vents to check how cold it is when running? TBH I would suspect the compressor.

Its cooling but not to the temp as expected- there is a difference between temp on the dial and temp off the vents

The compressor clutch is engaging when the button is pressed- so it spins when on

I may call defeat on this one and let an expert have a look...

Where did you have it re gassed if you don't mind me asking, it's possible it wasn't vacuumed out enough? Should be icy cold from the vents regardless of where the temp gauge is. Tanvic Tyres do re-gassing at reasonable cost.

Hi all

Going to have another crack at this tomorrow

Got multimeter ready to start to check voltages across compressor, dryer and relay

Any other pointers for me to look at- will fire up inpa again

Checked that the green wire to the fan is ok and the fan works fine

One thing I would check if you can is correct operation of the system pressure switch Stuart. Seems strange that the A/C “works“ just doesn’t get cold and that points to the gas side I think.

So here is where I’m up to

Can find electrical power at the compressor, the dryer etc

Have lubricated the clutch

Checked fuses

The only thing I’m not getting a happy clean feeling with is the relay

I’m not getting a clear click from the relay area when switching on off

Could this be a relay issue on relay 5 under the fuses?

Thoughts?

Tony I may ask you to send me contact details of your guy in tanvic- would they look at diagnostics for me on the aircon or just check the system pressures etc?

This situation is pretty interesting. I see that you made all the tests so that I won't ask you about them. Did you try to contact a company which deals with this stuff and things?

Now I've tried Carly and the only 'urgent' errors thrown up by a scan were: aircon!

I’ve popped my central ac control panel out to see if anything obvious- the sensor in the dash is very gunked up so will see if that makes a difference

I note that I don’t think you can swap hvac control panels out like for like- without coding

But- if the sensor is defective could you replace that? Looks like it unscrews?

You should be able to change individual sensors I would have thought, although you may have to “tell” the car that you have done so.
