On the face-lift Z3's the central locking and alarm are all part of the ZKE4 (general module 4). The large module with the 3 plugs going to it. There is no separate alarm or central locking module. This is different to the pre-face lift Z3's, where there is a separate alarm module.

If your car pre-wired? Historically the Z3 comes pre-wired for all options.

What is needed to get central locking working?
  • A key with the central locking buttons. As you have a face lift Z3, there is no separate key fob for central locking. Talk to your local BMW dealer and see what options there are for keys for your car. A 2 button key is for the Infra Red system and the 3 button key is for the radio frequency system. If they can not supply are central locking key, then your only option is to get an aftermarket central locking system.
  • The Central locking receiver for the central locking is in the inside rear view mirror. See Vehicle Trim in RealOEM. There are 3 options, Infra Red, Manual and Radio Frequency. Which one do you have? Which central locking key system can the BMW dealer supply? Buy the mirror that matches the system.
  • Door and Boot electrical actuators. In RealOEM see Bodywork\Door front etc. Are they there or do you need to fit them? Are the electrical connectors there?
  • Coding of the ZKE4? I do not know if this is a plug and play upgrade or if you have to do some coding in the ZKE4 to turn central locking on.
Have a look at this thread where I tried to help another Z3 owner. He got the run around from unhelpful members who did not know the differences between the pre-face lift and face lift Z3's. In the end, he went with an aftermarket set up after spending a lot of money on keys and the wrong parts. https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/newbie-keyless-entry-module-p-n-for-2001-z3.1413028/

What is needed to get the alarm system working?
  • Items are in RealOEM under "Audio, Navigation, Electronic systems"
  • Coding of the ZKE4? I do not know if this is a plug and play upgrade or if you have to do some coding in the ZKE4 to turn central locking on.
Probably your best option, is to contact one of the resident Z3 dismantlers like @spurs fan in a coupe and see if he has a complete set up, from ZKE4 to inside rear view mirror etc.

Same question here

I want to retrofit alarm to my recently purchased Z3. European Z3 CM11, prewired for alarm, no DWA module

I successfully retrofitted cruise control (actuator, double cabled butterfly, CC Stalk and CC module), succesfully added remote lock unlock ( mirror, the harness needed from mirror to the pre wired plug below dash) but have a problem with alarm...

Although my Z3 its prewired ( siren added, bonnet switch added, Tell-tale Led added, tilt sensor added, ZKE coded to retrofit alarm antitheft via a BMW dealer ) after adding all required parts, when I press the lock button in my key ( three button, with the big BMW lock button plus unlock button and interior light button) nothing happens. No tell-tale led flash ,or indicator lights blinking)

Any thoughts?

Problem solved!

Althought realoem reports that car should have ZKE GMIV High 12V , the actual unit was a ZKE GMIV Low 12V. So replace the Low 12V with a High 12V module and everything works as it should.

I used an E36 ZKE GM IV High 12V module, today coded to my Z3 and now door sensors ,
bonnet sensor and tilt sensor activate the siren when you try to open the doors, bonnet or try to shake the car 😃

Also led flashes slowly when I lock the doors with remote control key if everything is working 😃, and if I simulate a problem in sensors, led flashes quickly for 10 seconds and then arms with the remaining "working" sensors

Hope this help anyone who want to add OEM BMW alarm system to his Z3

Interesting update:

Searching for days about Interior Motion Sensor for Z3's but couldn't find anything helpful...so reading the Z3 Electrical troubleshooting Manual found out that the Interior motion sensor place is in drivers side, near the Obd port, it has pre existing plastic holes to screw the sensor, and also the 4 pin connector that is for the sensor :)

Have to say my car is European LHD

So I found a Z3 Burglar Alarm Module, connected it to the 4-pin connector and tomorrow I will go to activate it 😄
