There have always been people who don't pay Road Tax, or have Insurance and bother with an MOT, but, should everyone else subsidise them too?

Tony.

I doubt you'd get anyone in government confirming that VED revenues fund the upkeep of the road network. So let's be honest it's simply just another tax system to extract revenues from the UK population.

I recently read an article that the council responsible for maintaining the Snake Pass could easily spend their entire annual road network budget maintaining just that one road. As a result they have appealed to the government to accept it as a national highway and maintain it centrally.

As for the DVLA rates of vehicle tax; the decision to tax EV's in addition to the introduction of the luxury car tax, for vehicles costing above £40k, in April 2021 just highlights how inappropriate the existing CO2 based pricing model currently is. But will it change anytime soon - well I think the new EV model just highlights they have no intention of moving away from the CO2 based scheme.

Cars with batteries are heavier, heavier = more road surface damage, they should be paying more than petrol cars, not less . . .
Bugger off. I have a 2.5 tonne Volvo estate PHEV. =))

Yes, all this crap about needing to have pay per mile because of EVs. I've always said just tax the buggers like everyone else. About time:thumbsup: Next lot, cyclists:thumbsup:

When the VED rules were altered, back in 2017 all vehicles should have been paying it onwards, even those originally exempt or low payment. The EV conundrum and fuel duty was already known then.

First year VED on any new car producing more than 76g/km CO2 will be DOUBLED from 2025.

Oh and spend your pension while you can; they are taxing them at 40% when you croak from now on.
