For low or high beams? They don't seem to do anything.
I suspect that my headlights might be aftermarket because they are the kind with the circle around them and don't seem to be attached to anything except to be held in by the necessary screws.

They should raise or lower the entire unit. Turn on low beams, shine them against a suitable flat surface, then adjust the switch; you should see the beam pattern move up or down. It's to avoid blinding oncoming cars if the front of the car should raise for some reason, such as towing, which may press the rear down.

If you have aftermarket headlights it is possible that whoever fitted them did not connect the actuators properley.

What is this? (See Pic). I can't see that it does anything nor was it explained in the manual.
Unless you have Xenons or LED lights, cars have had those adjusters for decades.

Page 80 of my manual.

Not in my manual. Page 80 shows the operation of the vents. I looked throught the whol manual and can find no picture or reference for this control. It's a dial that starts at 0. When you turn it to the right it comes to number 1 then lastly to number 2. I can't see how these corresopond to the function of raising or lowering the head lamps unless the numbers are for reference and the space between the numbers is for minor adjustment. Whatever they are for they don't seem to to anything with my car.

In my manual it's page 76 "Beam Angle Adjustment"

Now I'm not 100% certain - I have no z3 lights to play with any more. But I think the thing that does the up/down thing is #3 in this picture.

Shine your dipped headlight onto the garage wall and slide the 0-1-2 roller one way then the other and the beam should move up/down. It's only a tiny amount and it might go slowly. You'll hardy notice it.
