I own a 1998 Z3 1.9 up to now its been a great car -and last year I took it to France where I work . The car is garaged and unfortunately I haven't used it much. Lately when I have started the engine on tick over it seems to choke itself until I start to drive .The situation got really bad this week -the engine started to misfire and backfire really bad -until there was a almighty backfire when driving -as a result THE REAR SILENCER HAS SPLIT IN TWO with the force of the backfire (it was in sound condition ) Any ideas or suggestions -greaty appreciated .

I would start by having the codes read to see what that says.

Cam and crankshaft sensors can cause bad running but not sure how extreme it can get, splitting a silencer is a pretty impressive misfire!

For an original corroded silencer is not a big deal; it's already splited by the rust and a backfire does the rest.
Codes must be checked before taking further action.
