Thought I had it sorted, found the perfect 2003/53 3.0 Sport. Read the advert, rang and spoke to the sales guy, worked out a deal to trade my MINI Cooper against it. All that was needed was the 100 mile drive to Cannock so we could inspect each others car and shake on the deal. Salesman said I could drive it away today as it was all prepped and ready anyway. Said I would not be disappointed.

Quotes from advert (bloody capital letters!)
  • "VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF REALLY IS IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION BOTH INSIDE AND OUT, BMW MAIN DEALERSHIP SUPPLIED SO ALL THE CHECKS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT BY BMW"
  • "ABSOLUTELY IMMACULATE"
Now please don't get me wrong, I'm not an idiot when it comes to car adverts and sales patter. I did not expect it to be "ABSOLUTELY IMMACULATE".
What I actually found was possibly the worst condition Z3 I have ever seen. I didn't finish inspecting it as I gave up, but here is the list of what I saw.
  • Bonnet: Numerous stone chips, 2 inch scratch which was down to the primer, minor scratches covering most of the bonnet.
  • Front bumper: Clearly introduced to a kerb while parking bending the bottom lip, horrendous stone chipping, large gouges, scratches. Side marker on passenger side broken, with long scuffs coming from it (clearly been dragged down the side of another car or wall!).
  • Passenger door: Supermarket dint (actually this was probably the best panel on the car!)
  • Passenger sill: Rusting badly, and in fact worse than my current Zed.
  • Passenger rear wheel arch: Section of lacquer missing (how is that even possible?)
  • Boot lid: Scuffed and badly scratched around boot lock. Lacquer missing/worn away from around BMW badge. Chrome lifter fitted to the boot lock broke when I used it to lift the boot open (looks like the hole made to fit it was too large?)
  • Inside the boot: Some interesting wear patterns on the non painted areas just under boot lid (possible repair work?)
  • Drivers door: They had this repaired (but didn't say how bad it was before). Odd marking in the lacquer which looks like someone leaned against it while it was wet.
At this point I gave up looking at the body work and got in the drivers seat. The interior on the whole was quite good. Turned the key and it sounded rather flat, and noticed the Engine Management Light had stayed on. Could feel the engine vibrating oddly. Tried restarting the engine a couple of times, but it stayed on.
Ok then, lets put the electric hood up (steady now, it actually worked). Roof in very poor condition, and the piping around the rear window had come away.
Gave up looking at the car...
In my opinion, and exactly what I presented to the salesman who had sat in his office while I looked over the car.
  • Complete respray required (no panel I could see without any damage)
  • New hood required
  • Diagnostics on why the EML stayed on
Told him I was not interested in the car, and that it was in a very poor condition. He made no attempt to defend the car, just said he was sorry if my time had been wasted.
So be warned if you happen to be in the Cannock area looking for a Black Z3 3.0 Sport, because you may end up looking at this one.

Should have asked for your petrol money refunding Gary, to many dealers are now over selling their cars and worse overpricing bad cars as well.

I think I was a bit shell shocked when I left, but as I was heading to see a mate locally I wasn't too bothered at the time. Getting a bit more angry now I've sat down and thought a bit more about it.

The odd thing was they properly refurbed the split rim alloys, and fitted what looked like new tyres as well. Odd they think to sort things out like that, so they must have looked really obvious and make the whole car look rough. Just a guess.

Good to chat tonight.
Certainly was fella! Really helpful to have a good rant about the car viewing...

It was all last minute, spotted it the night before and contact them at 9am the next day! It wasn't a complete waster, as I have a mate a bit further up the M6 and he bought me a chinese takeaway.
