I have the option to extend the BMW warranty on my car. Interested to hear any thoughts on it. My view is that the cost could easily be offset with just a single repair bill.

I'm not sure what the warranty covers these days but if it's like is was before they stopped allowing me to renew it then I would. The warranty I had covered everything apart from wear and tear items so if anything at all needed doing then it got done. It also depends what it costs now, I think i used to pay around £650 a year which had all the road side assistance too so if you were stuck with a puncture and no spare they would come and look after you.

Yes its the comprehensive one which covers just about everything apart from wear and tear service items. It's about £70/mth including roadside recovery so will probably go for it as an unforeseen repair could be very expensive. I'm not sure how many years you can keep extending it, the only restriction I could see was exceeding 100,000m?

Those were the day
The stealers recovery Bmw 5 series would come to your house for a breakdown or non start
Sign here, it wasn't broken sir, but who care's your covered with a warranty
I stopped that after they wanted silly money to cover the ///M
Would i be silly thinking on memory they wanted £1800 :-o :-o
No more warranty :(
I had the warranty for years, they would just replace parts, without question
no wonder the cost spiralled

Way back it was 60k no limit on age of car, but cars live longer now

That was either a very long time ago, or not the full cover
As they started to split the cost of cover into different amounts
As people had started to stop extending their warranty

It's about £700 or so a year for the comprehensive level of cover for my 2002 car. You have to provide the mileage to get the quotation so I'm guessing the higher it gets then so does the premium or a reduced level of cover.

Had my Z4 1yr tomoz, almost 12000 smiles later :coolsteer) ,i am doing my warranty today, cost £437,bmw Z4 3.0,just under 60,000 on clock, with this warranty they cover cars up to 100,000,after that forget it.
But as i am touring abroad this year the overall cover is worth it just for the piece of mind in the event of accident, punctures(no spare wheel),and if you offset the cost of buying extra european breakdown cover, min £60- then to me its well worth it.
Roll on June :D :D :D :coolsteer)

Please note - other Warranty Companies are available ;)

IIRC you had to have your car serviced by a BMW dealer, to maintain the warranty?

Like any insurance policy, if you make a claim you win - if you don't need to claim you lose
However, it is peace-of-mind, if an M engine goes, it is several thousand pounds to replace

Just renewned mine 5mins ago, asked the question and as long as its serviced to as per service intervals it does not have to be an actual BMW garage,i actually use my local bmw indie :coolsteer)

Warranty is great for a daily used car
No good for one that sits in the garage a lot
ie 2k max a year
I got my monies worth when i had warranties
on all the 3 series and the 1.9 Z3 we had

I agree with boysie.

If these cars are not used on a daily basis, why pay out for a warranty?

Most of the time its money for old rope.

About 8 - 10 years ago. BMW stopped the renewals so everyone was clambering for a different warranty supplier and the car club got a deal with one i think but can't remember who. I never paid over £800 and had everything covered with the guaranteed MOT passing etc. (obviously as long as it's not the wear and tear items failing it).

Sometimes not using a car also causes other problems so even though it might only do a few thousand a year I used to have it covered.

If was a non-M car I would be minded not to renew but as it is I think £700 a year is a reasonable trade-off against a potential repair costing thousands even if the risk is low with it being weekend only car.

When i stopped my warranty
What looked at, let me get through this first year
If i do thats enough to pay for a reasonable or small major repair, even a vanos
second year quids in, I'm now on my 11+year, I'm now squids in pocket
:D :D

I have just renewed my BMW warranty on the M. £36 per month for engine and drivetrain only and a £250 excess.
Last year I paid £1200 all inclusive with no excess and cancelled it after 6 months.

The engine/ box is the thing I worry about most,
.
£1200-ouch,must be cause its an M,just done mine today all inc £100-excess Z4 3.0 £437. I worry most about the reported dodgy steering box,and roof motor. And the rear springs .
