HI all,

I am looking to buy a 2001 2.2 BMW Z3 and was looking for any advice when doing so, any common issue/faults or any helpful information would be greatly appreciated

Welcome.... start here for high level stuff. https://zroadster.org/threads/z3-buying-guide-video.46189/

@Mike Fishwick is an authority as well.. just google him...........and then pull up a seat as you are in the right place for advice....whether you want it or not ;)

The 2.2 is the sweetspot IMO.. best sound too
Always start with the basics .. Does the MOT history show any repeated advisories for the same issue (lack of care), Body and paint condition, Any engine lights on, weird noises, do all the buttons work, roof and rear window condition, check all carpets for damp, does it come with an inch thick folder of receipts and history..100k miles is not high! is it leaking oil.. actually forget that its a BMW.
As with all 20 year plus cars rust is your main enemy.. they go at the front and rear of the outer sills most often (easy fix but budget it in)... and also the rear wings. Bushings and suspension are likely to be shot if original.

I consider air con and OBC options essential (hard to retrofit); heated leather seats and cruise control highly desirable (can be retrofitted at reasonable cost). As said above, you want a well cared for example with evidence of any MOT advisories sorted (or allow for in price).
Paint should be in good condition; watch for rust and lacquer peel - each panel needing attention might cost circa £500 to have rectified properly. Internal door handles are costly to replace (circa £400 for new).
Hope this helps.

I’d get the cheapest one you can find and then progressively spend a fortune at your trusted friendly z3 breaker, I hear it’s very rewarding that way.
Even if you don’t get the cheapest one you’ll end up having your friendly breaker on speed dial🤣

Hello fellow newbie.
I spent hours sifting through the various You Tube videos to help me get to know the Z3 and issues to be aware/wary of. My search was for a 2000 3.0i and I was lucky enough to find a pristine example and negotiated a deal on-line via the French website 'Leboncoin' Always tricky but I asked the the owner for the VIN number and copies of maintenance papers - and a walkaround video. With the VIN you should be able to get a report on the car.. But, to cut to your q. - my search included this review (of aZ3 coupe) but i's a good summary of the various points to consider - hope it helps. Good luck.
