Hi guys. I am thinking of painting the side grill chrome on my silver BMW Z3. The problem is I have never painting a car body part before therefore do not know the pre requisites and pointers to keep in mind.

If someone has gone through this process before can you kindly share how this is done. I am reluctant to buy already painted ones as I know it is not too diffcult to do them on my own.

Thanks
Saad

Welcome to the forum Saad.

I've personally not attempted any thing like this, but I'm not sure how you can paint "chrome". Did you have a specific product in mind? It might be a sensible idea to see if you can pick up some spare side grills to practice - just in case ;)

I'm sure someone more helpful will be along soon!

I'd definitely recommend getting a set from eBay if it's a chrome finish you're after as it'll be almost impossible to get that kind of finish from a spray. I think I sold mine for about £65 a year or so ago and so not too expensive. Once you factor in the various grades of sand paper, under coat / primer, paint, clear coat etc I reckon you'd be down a good £35 before you've attacked it and if you've had no experience you may waste a fair bit. Don't mean to be negative as it's great to try and have a go yourself but in my experience these little DIY jobs end up costing more and looking worse than just buying the real deal - best of luck :)

Edit: Only just spotted post above - £75 is a decent price - I'd take them if I was in your shoes ;)

Thanks a lot guys for the word of advice. I did some research as well and you guys are right Chrome is hard to do through spray cans. I think I will leave it for the professionals. I am looking through ebay if I can find any cheap :)

I have been looking for a local firm, to Lincoln that is, who do wrapping as I want to get the door mirrors and outer door handles done on my Touareg. Perhaps this is a possible route to go down Saad as an option to get your gills "chromed". Anyone know of any possible contacts out there who might even do a postal service?

Thanks for the offer. I went down the dificult road and did the paint myself. To be honest it was a breeze. It cost me a total of 30 quid and it looks pretty good as well. My budget was a little low so I would not have been able to meet your offer.

Thanks for your helps guys.

Hi Saad, welcome from Canada. I'm a bit confused (it's the drugs) are you doing chrome to silver or silver to chrome? Good on you to try it yourself and have it turn out ! JIM

Keith,

If you don't get the Chrome Side Vents you are looking for I have a set coming up for sale within the next two weeks. They are in excellent order and I paid £60 recently for two new BMW Roundels for them - example photo attached. I would be looking £80 for both which includes postage to a UK address.
