The brakes on Ann-Marie's new car just didn't feel right to me.

Bled them this weekend and little air came out of the left front. Felt better but had a little judder in the steering under braking. The discs had a few corrosion marks in them and I had a set of very new one laying around from when I put big brakes in mine so I figured I would swap them out.

When I pulled the brakes off I found some pits in the pads.

Anyone ever seen this? New to me and I have replaced alot of brakes in over the years.

To me it looks like the brake ferodo is weakened.. on the disc if you follow the hologram so to speak it looks like the holes in the disc line up with the holes made in the pad .. think they just very brittle

Well as you know the car hasn't had much use over recent times. A new set of pads is an easy job.

Hi Delk I have seen this once or twice over the years you see on Mercs with drilled discs .
My personal opinion on the cause is generally its low mileage cars I think what it could be is some pads have a higher metal content which can corrode putting pressure on the pad surface which then gives easier on the drilled and grooved areas as there is a significant air gap to allow the surface to break away more easily than on a solid disc surface thats my thoughts on it :)
Then again I could be talking nonsense :bag:

I think you're spot one Steve, I was only saying that it is quite common to see on cars that haven't been used a lot and nothing to particularly worry about.:)

These are rears. Thought it s was as bad but told that’s pretty normal.
Just seems like a lot of pads not making contact with all those little ‘craters’ in them (unless the material is compressible so makes full contact when under pressure?

Iron in the pads corroding makes sense to me. Especially since you can see signs of corrosion on the discs themselves.
