Certificate of entitlement V750

Hi
Does anyone have experience with one of these forms
ie tranfering to a nominee or vehicle
i recently purchased this plate on ebay and the seller forwarded me the V750,
he had signed the box 6 as requested on form
i thought, right where do i put my address as the nominee.
This is where the problem occurs, there is nowhere to put my address
so the certificate of entitlement goes back to the seller :-\ .
Whilst reading the form in section 1, the "purchaser not the nominee"
has to sign the form in section 1 to assign certicate to a vehicle
i am totaly lost here,
Can somebody please help me

From memory and I might be wrong here,

The current owner has to send off the form to add your name as a nominee and the DVLA send the amended form with your name printed as nominee back to him.

He then signs the form where required and sends it to you.

The plate can then be assigned to any car with your name on the V5 logbook but the names must match exactly so check how your name is on the V5 before you give it to the seller to add as the nominee.

If your V5 is in say your wife's name then you need to get that added as the nominee.

You have to remember registrations system was not originally designed to buy and sell regs as a commodity and with the introduction of cherished plates popularity the DVLA have to work within legal framework and the nominee system is very cumbersome.

There is a certain degree of trust involved.

I have a private plate on my company car but I had to add the company name as nominee as the cars V5 is in the company name. I could then put the reg on the car but legally the plate now belongs to the company. If I took it off the car the retention doc would be in the company name and it would have to add my name as a nominee before I could put it on a car registered to me.

I think there is a £25 charge to add a nominee and most sale adverts confirm if this is included in the selling price or not.

That's how I've had to do it a couple of times unless anyone can confirm an easier way ?

So the seller should have added you as nominee and got the amended oform back before sending it to you. That's why there is nowhere to put your address. The DVLA are not interested in the nominees address.

Buying from a private number dealer

Dealers sell unissued registration numbers bought from DVLA Personalised Registrations, previously issued registration numbers from their own stock, or they act as an agent for motorists who want to sell their registration number.

Whether buying for yourself or as a gift for someone else, you can buy a registration number from a dealer in two ways:

Buy and assign

The dealer arranges the sale and puts the registration number on the vehicle for you. You'll then receive an authorisation letter to get the number plate made up.

Buy only

The dealer arranges the sale and provides you with a certificate produced by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). You'll need to assign the registration number to the vehicle yourself.

If you buy a ‘new’ unissued registration number:
•you’ll get a certificate of entitlement (V750) showing the dealer as the ‘purchaser’ and your name or someone else’s name (if bought as a gift) as the ‘nominee’

If you buy a previously issued registration number:
•you’ll get a retention document (V778) showing the person selling the registration number as the ‘grantee’ and your name or someone else’s name (if bought as a gift) as the ‘nominee’


What you get for your money

You only buy the right to have a particular registration number assigned (put on) to and displayed on a vehicle registered in your name, or in the name of another person. All registration numbers are owned by the Secretary of State.

The certificate of entitlement or retention document:
•shows the registration number
•needs to be signed by the purchaser named at the top of certificate of entitlement or the grantee named at the top of the retention document
•shows the date the right to assign the registration number will end
•the right can be extended for a further one, two or three years

The nominee has no right to the registration number until it's assigned to their vehicle. You can add (if you don’t have one), or change a nominee any time or at the same time the registration number is assigned.

If the dealer is named as the purchaser or grantee, they will normally need to do this for you and may charge for their services.

Problem
The seller sent me the V750 signed plus £25 and
left me to do the rest
I have it left some time now, several months
and i now cant get hold of seller :-s
i thougth i could just tranfer it to vehicle

Boysie,

Not to worry you but I think you need to try and get this sorted out ASAP and as suggested you should speak to the DVLA for advice. They may be limited as to what they can / cannot confirm due to data protection as so far as they are concerned as you are not named on the retention doc as the purchaser or nominee.

The links above basically confirm what I've said:

"If you want to assign the registration number to a vehicle belonging to someone not named on the certificate, the person named as the 'purchaser' will first need to apply to the DVLA to change the 'nominee' (DVLA fee applies)."

ie the seller should have added you are a nominee before sending the retention doc to you. Its worthless to you without him doing that. It can take a few weeks from when you "buy" the reg for the seller to do that and then send you the rentention doc with you named as nominee. That is where the trust comes in.

If you bought from an agent / dealer then they would know this and I would smell a rat.

If it was a private sale they may not have realised as it is a very confusing / cumbersome process but you will still need to get them to do it and agree who will pay the DVLA fee to add you as nominee.
