After hearing a before and after youtube Dopler driveby on the interwebs, I decided to order the Dinan intake with the stage 2 ECU Programming and had it installed by my friends at APTuning in Lebanon PA. Here is the sales pitch from Dinan:

Stage 2 Engine Software is for use with the High Flow Cold Air Intake, ensuring optimum performance and drivability. Dinan Performance Engine Software unleashes more power from your BMW E36/7/8 Z3M by re-programming the fuel mixture and ignition timing parameters of the engine management system. Furthermore, the software safely raises the rev-limit, giving your BMW a broader power band and greater road speed potential in each gear. Significant gains are also achieved at part throttle, making extra power available where you spend the bulk of the time driving. The top speed governor has also been eliminated, enabling the vehicle to achieve its natural top speed.
Features:

  • More Power (with intake): Max gains of +21 HP and +20 lb-ft TRQ
  • 50 State Emissions legal; CARB EO # D-176-13
  • 200 RPM rev-limit increase
  • Improved throttle response
  • Top speed governor removed
  • Smooth and predictable power delivery
Between that and the throatier Dopler promises I was all in. After a week of testing I am here to testify this is all true. ...except the top speed. Hopefully I never have to test that one. But more power? yes Improved throttle response? Yes Smoother and more predictable power? Yes! and when it does kick in it starts asperating and thats when you hear the throatier exhaust and its sweet sweet music!
:rally: !!!

If you can endure the cost, I would highly recommend this upgrade. Luckily my matrimonial accounting allows the use of moneys refunded from otherwise sunk entertainment ventures (thank you Baltimore Ravens), to be used with wide discretion. So I'm basically replacing football tickets with car parts ;)

Enjoy! Bernie

Lessons learned:
Filter sits under the light and all the guarding associated with that area comes out. I wanted to install angel eyes and decided to get those in prior to taking for Dinan install. It would have been an easier install of the light post intake, but only a little bit. And that gave me a chance to clean the engine compartment without the old intake so it looked all clean comimg out of the shop.
