I thought my car was really well polished, but today I gave it a treatment with the Autoglym clay bar system, what a difference! I keep going outside now just to caress the paintwork, the neighbours must think I'm nuts. Best hour I've ever spent on car care.

It's amazing how much dirt the clay lifts out when you think the car is clean! And it's great how smooth it feels afterwards.

Claying is possibly the best thing to do to paintwork if it's never been done.

My son uses a clay "mitt", so much easier to use than the clay bar.
I've used a mitt and don't get on with it so well, I find a bit of clay comes off sometimes.
I may be putting too much pressure?
Not sure how hard to press really.
I'm going to try a bar to compare.

you'll be amazed at how smooth the paint will feel after
Also compare how the paint looks at dusk before and after. Especially silver - it's a massive visible difference in that light. I did the freelander first time last year. It looks like it's just out the showroom.

Not used a mit. The bar is great - just keep turning and folding it. Use plenty of fluid and use in straight lines not a circular motion.
You shouldn't need to press on hard at all.

I have used several different clay bars over the years, recently discovered the Farecla G3 clay mitt (they sell them in halfords), I dont plan on going back to a clay bar again.

I used it on the Z4 last weekend (along with a few other detailing bits), the paint on this is 14 years old btw:

That looks liquid mate, great job. I'm thinking a mitt would probably my best option.

I just want to add that the above was not achieved by claying alone. Its has also had a cutting polish and refining polish applied with a daspro6. The clay mitt was part of the decontamination process prior to this.
