Does anyone know of a code reader I can get for my Z3 2.8? I believe it's the one that can be connected to a laptop with the right software. I don't plan on making changes, but I noticed a couple of days ago it was hunting and almost cut out.

There's been no problem since but I want to make sure.

On a separate note, this has so far been one of the most informative sites I've come across in years.

Love it.

I use the c110 scanner needs no laptop easy to use you just may need the adapter to connect it to the port under the bonnet for full access .
Cost around £40 on ebay and does the job

The bccables bundle is good too borrowed this from another member tracing an abs fault has more function as its bmw's software but is far more technical and bulky when you need a laptop etc but a good tool at a good price direct from them

It seems both do a relatively decent job, but I'll go for the bccables purely for the reason that in time I may be able to do more without.
...and the laptop I have was given to me so I've got to find a use for it!!

You should concentrate on using INPA first... it all bit daunting but actually INPA is pretty easy once you get the hang of it..

I managed to get the bccables, and played around with what I think was INPA (could have been the DIS when I think now). Either way, I've reset the service indicator, checked for any errors (none) and had a look at what previous errors there were. It wasn't the easiest method as I had to connect it to the port under the bonnet. But it works and I'm pleased with my understanding of the car.

I do recommend it to anyone who's unsure as it gives a wealth of info, and can be printed off and added to the history file.

Does the software come with the cable? I have got hold of the hardware that plugs into the port under the bonnet but have no software. I am assuming te software is quite old also needs to be run on an XP laptop as well?

When I ordered the bccables it came with the software. It runs on XP and Win 7. It took a while for me to load the software.

it will run on windows 8 and 8.1 too, it doesn't mention windows 10 but I will have the answer to this in a couple of days. don't try and use another cable like I have, they don't work with other software.

I'm going to give the Harbor Freight OBSII/ABS reader a try, gets great reviews and coupon makes it $79.95.... hoping it will read/communicate with my Z, but I need the adapter that goes from US square to BMW round plug, yes?
Just finding it frustrating how many different parts are different for same exact model, just depends on where it was built.
Noticed the port cover inside cabin is round, but haven't checked port under hood. Need to reset brake light, nephew didn't know he had to replace brake sensor with brake change, so light on even with new brakes. Also check engine light came on, thinking it due to wrong gas cap (old flat metal one) but won't know till indo diagnostic.
Embarrassing how I join up and nothing but questions, but first BMW so very ignorant about it.
Thanks all for your help AND patience with me!!

Never be afraid you are asking too many questions. Even though the cars have been around since 96 there may still be a few areas where no one has run into a particular problem.. Also answers to your queries help others!! JIM
