You're welcome. TBH I had those codes on permanently on a V*uxh*ll turbo and decided not to worry about them as the emissions were within limits at each MOT and the car ran well.

There are people more knowledgable than me on this forum who will tell you how to "correct" the situation.

Forum search is your friend here. Using "fuel trim" suggests an air leak somewhere, usually in the rubber pipes between the MAF and the throttle body or a problem with the DISA valve which may just need cleaning.

That's not to say that there aren't more reasons for the symptoms you are experiencing- lots of expertise on here which will probably manifest itself soon.

Thank you so much for your assistance
It is very helpful.
I will set about investigating.
I would not bother with it, but the engine management light on, I am told is a retest. Do you know of a piece of apparatus that I can clear the light when I get to the MOT centre. When my mechanic clears the light it normally takes a few miles for it to come on again?
Many thanks
Pete

I use a Creator scanner for that- about £45 on eBay depending on whether or not you want a colour display. You'll also need a "BMW OBD adaptor" to access the round socket under the bonnet- about £8 for that. The OBD socket under the dashboard has limited functionality and won't access engine codes.

The fuel trim codes are almost certainly down to an air leak into the engines vaccum system, a smoke test will reveal any holes or splits across the engine if you cant find them on a visual check. The smoke needs to be pumped in the intake bellows after the Maf and with the throttle pedal depressed to allow the smoke free passage into the engine. The smoke will make its way into the engines vaccum system right across the engine and into the exhaust. Escaping smoke will find any holes or splits, replace any componants that you find with holes or splits.
Creator 310+ for a scanner is quite capable it will need a 20pin to 16pin OBD2 cable changer to plug it into the engine bay 20pin diagnostic socket. If your car has an OBD2 16pin socket under the steering inside the car that will only read the engine module and transmission module it will not read any other of the modules. The 20pin Pacman socket reads all modules.
Worth noting gaskets that are leaking oil will also allow air in be sure to check out the cam cover for any signs of oil leaks or escaping smoke.
