I'm in a pickle, or rather my car is. I recently had a Inspection l and ll performed in connection with an MOT. However since this there have been some unexpected side effects, which I cannot explain and I need some help.
l): Upon starting in the morning after car has sat for more than 2 hours without being started, the trip teller goes back to zero so I can't work out how many miles I have done; the time resets to --:-- and the date is not what it is supposed to be.
ll): When I reverse into a parking space the steering wheel symbol briefly flashes yellow, a small bulb flashes yellow and a steering wheel with a lightning bolt through it also flashes yellow. Then the steering becomes extremely heavy, as if the power steering briefly fails, before everything goes back to normal. Also when I want to turn sharply into a driveway, the steering locks.
I took Merlot out for an extended drive today to test if it behaves normally on a run. I have no complaints at quite high speeds and quite low speeds. The steering seems very light the faster I go, but I'm getting used to that now. There is also a slight squeaking sound when I turn the wheel.
As I say, this all started after the service and I have taken it back to the garage twice to no avail, as it reverts back to the problems outlined above. I sincerely hope someone here knows a) what the problems may be and b) how they can be solved.
Sorry for such a lengthy letter, but I thought ~I should explain myself fully.

If there is danger of the steering locking I would take the car OTR immediately. Have you breakdown cover? If so, could be worth calling them out.
Take care.

Yes I hear you, but the locking only happens briefly at very slow speeds. I have breakdown cover, but don't feel the need yet, as I'm able to get from a to b without problems.
There must be an underlying problem though, as to why this is suddenly happening, which is why I'm writing.

Is your steering electric? Had similar issues (and lots of dashboard lights) on a (then) brand new 2012 325i touring with electric power steering. I was strongly advised not to drive the car by BMW and they ended up replacing the rack, column etc under warranty. Hope its simpler than this for you but I wouldn't want to take a risk with steering.

Yeah that won't get checked. It's only a thought as your seeing electrical issues. Maybe get it tested to rule it out.

How would you go about testing a battery? Do I call out the breakdown service?

that's one way of checking it. Some garages have testing equipment. It's a quick process to check.

Breakdown would be able to check the battery for you, and maybe have a shot at diagnostics for free!

Check the battery connections are nice and tight. This is a simple check that many people overlook.

I recently asked in our local battery shop (very good by the way and yes, dedicated to batteries) to see the equipment used to test the batteries. It's clever stuff and does a full health check.

It was made by Yuasa (one of those biggest names most have never heard of) and depending on the model costs £1000-£2000!

In case anyone is interested - their prices are very competitive and close to best mail order prices.
