hi all as a few of us now have da polishers in our armoury :).
gaz has asked if we can pass on some of our knowledge as we learn B-)
so here goes ;)
the panel I picked for correction was the boot lid as it had quite q few swirls and light scratches.
first thing I did was to check the depth of the clear coat. I was lucky a friend has a paint depth gauge.
generally over the boot surface the depth was 30/40 microns ( but we checked over the car in random spots and it varied from 30/80 microns making it clear that some areas had been re sprayed.
as the car was clean the first treatment was quick detailer to remove any dust.
then a clay treatment to remove any surface contamination.
(I have have stuck with the meguires range of products after our visit this month :D)

the next move was to use a correction wax to remove the defects.so out with the da and a polishing pad.maguires recommend using the yellow pad and a speed setting between 3/5.

the black pad it for polishing only and applying wax.

the bottle I selected was swirl x.
meguires have three in the range scratch x for heavy scratch removal in local areas and also swirl x and ultimate compound light and heavy.
they suggest doing 50cmx50cm area at a time.
so a x of the swirl x on the yellow buffing pad to start.then dab the pad on the area to be treated (to spread the product about)
with the da now resting on the surface I hit the start button.
first making overlapping passes vertical and the same horizontal
making 5 repeat passes in all. then remove the excess swirl x with a microfibre cloth.
next move was to check the results and repeat if not happy :D ( I was very ;) :D )
right next up was the pre wax polish

loaded the next yellow pad with the pre wax and repeated the 50 x 50 area with the same technique as the swirl x.
when the residue was wiped off the finish was very pleasing :D :D

repeated the pre wax twice. ;)
finally the ultimate wax finish.

changed the da to the black soft buff pad same application as the other treatments but only two passes not to much pressure speed setting between 2/5 and let the da drive itself across the surface.
letting the wax dry to a haze about 10 mins then polishing off with a microfiber cloth to a high gloss finish
:D :D
in conclusion my first experience with the da was good and very pleased with the results
but still lots to learn and always up for any helpful pointers
cheers mick \m/

Good write up mick, you sure about those paint thicknesses?

40 microns is very thin?

Did you calibrate the gauge first?

Thanks Mick,

That write up was just what I was thinking of, so thanks for sorting it so quickly :-bd

Hopefully a few other wills share similar polishing write ups (hint, hint Mark ;) )

Cheers, Gary

No I can't sell it.

It's just too good to sell.

And nobody could love it more than me.

I've brought it a valentines meal for 2!

What are the differences between the different polishing machines, da and rotary? save me googling it ;)
I fancy getting a machine myself as it takes ages by hand on off on off on off etc etc

yes mark we did calibrate first as I say it varied all over the car.
the only reason we measured the depth was to see how much was on there in the first place and how much it was degraded by correction.
the answer was less than .002 microns so not alot :D

hi pete its good using the da sure you will get on ok.
as I was doing around the hood area I put a sheet over the hood and masked it to the rubber seal around the hood.
but they are very controllable so go just where you want ie: as close to the edges as you want :D
you don't need a gauge as I said to mark the only reason I checked it was to see how much clear clearcoat would degrade by polishing
cheers mick :)

hi jamezze
in answer to your question a da oscillate in a rotary motion and will not burn the paint surface it kept in one place for a short period.
where as a rotary just goes round on its own axis and can burn the paint if not used right.
marks two links are really good reads and lots of great info I have digested them both (would have been nice with a little more salt and pepper) ;)
need to get a brinkman me thinks \m/

if im honest im gobsmacked.

ferrari enzo paint is around 40 microns thick and that is no primer, 2 coats of colour and 2 coats of clear. Z3 paint should be 100+ at least. couple that with the scratch-x which is basically t-cut and should only be used by hand in very severe occasions im amazed you didnt burn through the paint.

however the results look fantastic so :-bd

That's why I questioned the results, it seems too thin.

The BMW paint is hard, so I can't see an issue with using a da.

Sounds like micks car has had plenty of spray work.

80 microns plus I would have expected.

meguires say scratch x is ok for da use and is not aggressive like t cut ;)
but I cant see the da removing the clearcoat its not as if you are using correction polishes all the time .
one off correction then look after the finish with correct washing and regular waxing.
so clearcoat should not be reduced in depth :) :) :)
