Has anyone tried mounting a dash cam upside down and f so does it record ok? Might seem like a daft question but a cheap camera I've been waiting for came this week and I want to mount it facing the rear.
Problem is the mount has a "ball joint" in it which doesn't allow enough angle when mounted on my wind deflector when it's the right way up, but it does if I turn it upside down.

Tony.

Most cameras have an option to invert the video so you should be able to mount the camera upside down. You'll have to look through the menu options.

If you scroll through the menu, and look for the Australian setting ;)

After a small dose of trial and error I've discovered that it doesn't matter how you mount the camera, it just records what it sees through the lens.;)

You had more than me then mate. The micro SD card threw a wobbler tonight so I'm down to my last two cards now. One ordered ready for next Sunday at Newark, should be here on Weds.

Do you know if you're meant to replace the memory cards now and then ?.
I have formatted mine once since I got the dash cam and it seems ok.

I think the ones I've bought are not top quality to be honest mate. I have gone for a different make and seller this time to see what happens. I also think it depends on the quality of the camera too maybe. This one is a cheap eBay buy. We'll see.

I got my next base Halfords cam replaced free because of the vibrating noise on clips I had uploaded, but haven't checked if it's any better yet with the new one .

It might not be mate. My front facing camera cost me about £60, not expensive I agree but the audio is ok. The one we bought in Florida is very good video but the audio not so good. You can see that if you check out my Florida video's on YouTube. My front cam is slightly loose in the mount (you can hear a slight vibration sometimes) which you can use to swap into another vehicle using a spare mount and power leads, I suppose you can't have it all?

True, but the thing is they'll all do the most important thing of recording evidence in an incident I guess, which was the primary reason for getting one.
But like most things you get what ya pay for.

On a different note I got myself a d.a polisher tonight same as @Antm72 :). Should be here next week .

That's an idea........could practice on your car first =)).
It wasn't that expensive, last night the highest bid was £31 so I put a max bid of £60 and got it for £53 plus postage :).
You're welcome to use it mate ;).

i suppose as your not watching the playback for pleasure it doesn't really matter which way up it records, just as long as it is recording what is going on behind. as for sd cards i didnt realise there are different write speeds until i had my dash cam, i brought a cheap 32gb card but it was too slow to capture the hd cam data (ok on a lower res though) apparently they have numbers on them for the write speed (@Redline would know more about this)

You want a class 10 minimum Jason.

Many chips are made in the same foundry - they start out exactly the the same. They're tested and graded which is why you get different card sizes and speeds. HD video has a continuous high data rate up to 7Mbit/s after compression depending on the compression rate applied. The faster the card the better able it is to cope.

There different read/write speeds within the classification. You will find some X10 cards much faster than others. Any x10 card will or should cope with standard HD video. If you go to UHD (also incorrectly known as 4k - it isn't quite) the data rate is upwards of 20Mbit/s, so, the fastest possible cards are needed. Full 4k has four times the data each frame and twice the frame rate of standard HD. Nobody will use 4k in a dashcam but the results are stunning in GoPro.

I get 4 hours of video on to a 32MB card in my dashcam.
They are cheap enough so I only ever buy x10 cards but I swap them around between cameras. I don't want to be fiddly to see if a card is actually fast enough in some of them.
The main thing is to look at the read/write speed even on a x10 card. They are different. Some are still much faster than others. For a dashcam a generic brand should be enough as well as being cheaper. For serious stuff I always go for Sandisk Ultras or Extreme but I do also use cheap cards in my Raspberry Pi. When dumping 10 frames a second of 25M-pixel full frame images using RAW in my camera, that is a colossal amount of data. The faster the card the better to stop buffering after a few frames.

You will find though that they do in fact wear out. The cards only have a finite write capacity - so many write cycles. With continuous writing, as in a dashcam, your are continuously using all the memory and so, after a while, some bits of memory will stop working. The cards themselves actually have more memory than they claim. Faulty bits are automatically swapped out so you don't see it. However, I've had two cards stop working entirely after lots of use. Unless your dashcam gives you a memory card error warning, check them every once in a while or you may find that at the very moment you need it, it doesn't work.

Thanks Ian, that would explain why over the last couple of years I have 2 Sandisk 32gb class 10 cards just stop writing the data so that my PC can't do anything with it. When I put a fresh card into the dash cam and format it, I'm ok for a good long while again.
Would you expect any thing to show it was on it's way out?

Am afraid they just die. No warning. Quite often the dashcam sees that card and thinks it is writing but it doesn't. Some little start up code to do a write and then read cycle would be useful.

Mine are Sandisk cards as well, the cam came with an 8gb card so I bought a 32gb and put that in. It's about 18 months old now but it doesn't get a lot of use as it's in my van and I work locally. Thinking it may be an idea to replace the card now.
