Drive shafts - will they come out without having to remove the exhausts?

No issues at present but I want to check the state of the abs rings after having corrosion problems on a couple of other cars.

The only issues you could have with the reluctor rings is possibly through corrosion under them and they could crack, although it is not a common thing. What is more likely is that through corrosion under the rings , the rings can begin to catch on the ABS sensor. An inexpensive fix for this is to remove the ABS sensor from the hub (not always straight forward) and place a washer between the sensor and the hub when refitting to "lift" the sensor away from the ring.

Tony.

To answer your original question, yes you can remove the drive shafts without removing the exhaust.

If you've still got black paint on the shafts they're likely ok around the abs ring.

The biggest problem now is the outer CV joint splines rusting into the hub flange. They can seize in enough to shrug off a 50 ton press so before you get too involved, slacken the driveshaft nut and see if the CV will move with light persuasion.

I've checked one side so far - abs ring ok. Drive shaft came out enough for inspection after overnight soak in kroil penetrating fluid. Drive shaft was trapped by ARB/shock so I didn't get it out on the bench. REALOEM shows the hub nut part number to be the same as E90 etc - but it's bigger.
