I came across this on episode 59 of Collecting Addicts on YouTube (Chris Harris, Neil Clifford, Edward Lovett, Chris Cooper and Manish Pandey)

Father and son team Phil and Will Churchill are doing this for the charity CALM ( Campaign Against Living Miserably ) which is essentially a suicide reduction charity.

“A passion for cars is predominantly a male pastime, but men also account for 75% of all suicides in the UK. CALM is working to prevent suicides, the largest killer of men under 50 in the U.K., and so the Vantage World Tour will be raising money to support their work.

For many, including ourselves, the car scene provides a distraction from the stresses of everyday life, as well as the chance to meet new people, make new friends and be there for each other. We want as many people as possible to feel part of our adventure.

Please become part of the Vantage World Tour’s Support Crew, and if you wish, make a donation to CALM.”

Phil & Will Churchill

Sounds like a challenge and great cause

To drive the equivalent of the circumference of the world (24,900 miles though you can't actually do that) averaging 30mpg at an average of 1.30ltr is just shy of 6k (ish). But then add the cost of boats / planes and who knows the actual cost.

I suspect the true cost is eye watering. They could have just got on with it privately, but as soon as you start looking for sponsorship, there has to be some charitable cause involved. Looks cool though and the car’s back story is interesting.

Middle class rich people doing what they fancy and calling it 'charity' gives me the hump TBH.
Anybody who is 'living miserably' would probably cheer up a lot if they borrowed the Vantage for a day, for free.
No need to drive around the world then, having a bloody good holiday while others are paying, using the 'charity' get out clause.

There is something horrendously ironic about a couple of rich people living it up travelling around the world in their AM, on the pretence of raising money for people with depression. I don't think it will help the beneficiaries somehow!

I am thinking of offering them £24,901 to NOT do this. I wonder what they would say?

Depression (which is what this CALM is all about) is a state of mind, driven by a myriad of different things. It has nothing to do with money. At all.
I have loads of money but am still a depressive. Go figure that one Phil & Will!

So they hope to raise £24,901 by driving round the planet? How much is it going to cost to raise that much? Nothing wrong with a bit of charity, but the cost/return bit seems off to me.
Carbon neutral, every mile behind the wheel will be offset with Net-Hero. The drivers will buy carbon credits, with each credit representing 1 ton of carbon dioxide captured from the atmosphere and stored permanently, thereby neutralising the V8 Vantage’s carbon footprint. www.net-hero.org

Does not compute. This is just wrong in many ways.

I believe the costs are being met by Phil and sponsors, the donations go to the CALM charity.

I think they are just doing their bit as they see it. Its all carbon neutral ( if you are into all that) and the sponsors and Phil pay for the costs, the donations go to the charity plus it is for a good cause. If I could fund something like that, which i cannot, I would do it but hey ho I just donate.

The beneficiaries of this challenge are those on the brink of taking their own lives who pick up the phone to the charity at the lowest point of their lives.... I am sure they will be glad the helpline is there and their families will be pleased that they will still be around.

Sounds like value for money to me

Not sure where they mentioned money having anything to do with depression tbh! They are using their money and sponsors money to raise money for the charity, 100% of donations go to the charity. the carbon stuff is offset by their carbon credits with net hero.

I agree it is cool and the car's story is very interesting.

I think there is only one sponsorship place left from my brief read up but the challenge has already started and is ongoing....good luck to them every penny donated goes to CALM which is a great cause.

I think this would be less irritating if they simply publicised the fact that they had done a cool trip without trying to justify the extravagance with fundraising and carbon offsetting. If they’re worried about carbon footprint, do a charity walk. Without that noise, it’s a great adventure for anyone interested in cars and travel.

Would anyone donate to a trip already done?

These days such things as carbon footprints are the norm for such events unfortunately.

Charity walks are great, perhaps some people want to contribute to charity by doing someting a bit different and if it gives them a load of publicity then thats the whole point.

Keep talking .....

I've done several things like this - smaller scale, but similar. Some people said "why don't you do it for charity?" My first thought was "it's costing enough all ready", but then I realised that they were suggesting - in all seriousness - that they thought people would sponsor me to go on holiday.

I'll sponsor people to...

stay silent
sit in a bath of baked beans
lie on a bed of nails
stay off their phones for 24 hours

It must ... be something that is not harmful, it must involve some adversity or discomfort, it mustn't benefit the participant (other than to make you think "well done").

Paying for some guy to do a Top Gear fun trip with his kid is just not what my idea of what sponsorship should be used for.

I read somewhere about your trip to the Monaco Grand Prix a few years back. Epic.
