hi all,
have looked on the net for the answer to this question but couldn't find the answer.
it is regarding the engine diagnostic fault light.
my zed is a 1997 1.9 m44 and am wondering should it have a diagnostic light?
i read the codes recently because she was running a bit rough and it came back with
the cam sensor, surely the light should have come on?
so i took the dash clocks out and found there is a bulb missing for the eml light.
is this right or has some dodgy person removed the bulb before i bought her.
thanks all..

I assume it should have a bulb for the EML light, the EML light is usually triggered on emissions which would be when your lambda sensor reads out side of tolerance for too long. I have diagnosed my own cam sensor and the EML light did not come on, and i have helped diagnose another members cam sensor today, and his EML light is not on so this would help substantiate this.

What code have you generated, P0340?

hi, thanks for the speedy reply. think it was P0340.
it was the diagnostic bulb that had me a bit baffled.
when i took the clocks out you could clearly see the "check engine" one had no bulb in.
i would have thought the light would light with ignition on and go off after starting.

Do you all know where the title M44 Massive came from?
It was a quote by @swamper that I stole a few years ago now.........:beer

That makes you a founding father then, I will include you in the history of the M44 massive.......when I write it of course ;)

Have you now replaced the bulb and did it light up when you did?

I have never seen mine illuminated, what I do know is that when it does it will throw an O2 sensor code, plus others, the O2 code is not saying the sensor is faulty, it saying that it has read the emissions and they are at one end of the spectrum, indicating a fault in the system, the other codes then help you diagnose the issue, so for instance if it is P0340 cam position sensor, we can assume that it is the sensor, as the M44 has a timing chain, and they rarely ever stretch. If this was an engine with a timing belt, I would check that the sensor is actually working, if it is, it then suggests there is wear mechanically, usually a stretched timing belt causing the sensor to read off, the ECU on getting this data then changes additions of fuel, which result in the emissions being out and the fault shown by the O2 sensor, hence the EML lights up. The EML light engaging would all depend on how far out the O2 sensor is reading, so you could have a P0340 code without the EML light as I have seen.

hi,
thanks for the reply's. interesting reading about the light.
fitted a new bulb and holder and can confirm that the light does not come on with ignition on (engine not running)
at least i know there is a bulb in there know.
ran inpa today and it came up 112 Phase sensor OBDII Error !!
take it i need a new cam sensor... where is the cheapest place for an original bmw one for the m44...
this is the diagnostic code in inpa...

I think I paid £80 from Coopers BMW, but don't forget we have discount with Sopers BMW on the forum, and I would buy oem with this item.

Have you reset the code yet?

It is important to do this and see if it returns, as stored codes can be old and not reflect current state, so I find it is best to clear codes then go for a drive again and then re check.

hi, thanks for the reply. good to know about Sopers BMW...
yes i cleared the code and reset the ecu's learn't values as well.
drove about 6 miles and read codes again. and it was back.
have also noticed when you do the cylinder smoothness test in inpa that no1 cylinder is a bit up and down
with its reading compared to the other 3.
also lambda readings are all over the shop when the car runs rough on idle.
but the lambda never goes above 1.0.

The lambda is just reporting the result of the issue, have you checked for air leaks in the induction pipe work? If they are all ok I would change the camshaft sensor.

hi,
thanks for the reply. yes have checked for air leaks from the air filter to the injectors.
the pipe from the airfilter to the inlet manifold has a pipe coming off going to the injectors
this had a split so till a replacement can be bought it has been taped up but is sealing ok.
will replace the cam sensor 1st.
the car was only used on short journeys till i bought it so i might even get the injectors
ultrasonically cleaned as well.
she's only got 69,000 miles on a 1997 year.
