Exhaust Upgrades

Has anyone fitted a stainless steel system to a 1998 Z3 2.8 Roadster and if so which make and/or where was it done? My car has the system with the electric valve on the back box, can that be deleted and if so how and is an engine mod/remap required? TIA

My 99 2.8 has had a full cat back system .i paid £290 with custom pipes in Doncaster.
Having added a full Simota induction kit too i had a stage 1 remap and have been very happy with it.
Its certainly changed the car.

That's what my supersprint does does on my 2.8 but with plenty of bass when's it hot so it's not as 'tinny' sounding like the S54 (it's a single pipe from resonator back as this 2.8 goes from 2 into one after the cats).

Depending where you base a custome made system is usually best value and you can have it tailored to your taste.
Otherwise off the shelf like Supersprint and Eisenmann are good options.

Ps if your car is going to be down in Kent for work then speak with @Tim beard (In Bexley) - he's had an awesome dual outlet system made for his Cobra Z3. Sounds very different, much more muscle car than others I've heard.

First time I heard an e46 M3 rev I thought it was broken!
It's an different sound shall we say, nice when you on it but when cruising with the roof down you need a bit of bass and burble. Otherwise you'll just be revving it and going too fast all the time!

I don't mind the bass sound, but with the 6-pots bmw many owners of aftermarket exhausts have complained a quite invasive "droning" buzz from the muffler that can be very stressful especially during long drives.
So, this is why I like the "tinny" note: ideally I'd leave it like it is below the 3000 rpm (the 2.2 already has a stock sport exhaust that crackles & pops when hot) with a metallic scream when I want to gun it.

I'm selling straight pipes for a 2.8, in the for sale section, there's links to videos of me driving with it.
It's very loud so I've got a magnaflow to replace it, but I am 5050 as I don't want it too quiet, it really does sound great and poppy on down revs

I have a cat back stainless system on my 2.8. Couldn't tell you what make it is as it was on when bought it. Everyone says when they are behind me on a cruise how nice it sounds, I love it and always listen to it rather than put the stereo on!

I have a Supersprint Cat back stainless steel exhaust on my 2.8 and have added a K&N 57i Induction Kit. Sounds and goes great

I love the standard sound on my Z, I was considering a new after market exhaust but I'm worried it won;t sound as good

For info, this is a pic of the tips of the magnaflow. Hopefully I get time to fit it soon, I really hope it sounds as good as it looks! Just out the box and initially very impressed with build quality.

The problem with fitting an aftermarket exhaust to our 6 cylinders IMO is that it takes really little to make it sound like..."cheap" (I am not sure this is the right word, but it's the one that gets closer to how I perceive it)
A V6 or a V8 can better benefit from a richer sound and still sound like "big" engines...whereas with the wrong pipe the L6 can get very close to a 4 cylinder...

If you had a Z4 then any sound would be better than no sound that even the 3.0 have. I missed the little drone and burble of our old 3.0 Z3 that i had a scorpion exhaust fitted. Now our Z4 sounds just like our Z3 did
