Fault code readers

Hi I have just bought a 1998 2.8 z3 for my weekend driver my daily driver is a 2006 msport x3 diesel
Is there a code reader that will work on both cars ?were abouts do you plug in to on a z3 ? Are there any code readers any one would recommend

Your 1998 prefacelift Z3 has a different diagnostic system to your 2006 car.
