So...I've bought an Aux in lead from Amazon....its all there. great.

Got the vent out (simples) and all going well. Plugged in the new socket and put the original wires (mine has Sat Nav, DSP and Bluetooth!!) in the new socket .....switched on, plugged in iPod/iPhone and hey Presto....absolutely BUGGER ALL comes up re "Aux"!!! So...am I messing it up (which pins go where?) OR....do I need to start soldering resistors into the new cable etc??? Seems a nightmare! Gutted...as I (stupidly) thought it was a plug n play job?!

HELP (AGAIN!!) PLEEEASE!!!!

EDIT!!! So....I know the Pins I think....but I think my cable needs a couple of capacitors and a resistor? Make sense?

Should be plug and play mate. Contact the seller and see what he says.

Tony.

Amazon.....so difficult to contact the seller, but easy to return mate.

Mine has the DSP/Pop up sat nav and Bluetooth. From what I’ve seen on other forums, looks like it may need a resistor in line somewhere, so the head unit see the input?? I’ve seen other leads with a box prior to the final connection, but wonder if that’s for later cars?

I put the aux in and then added the two original pins back into their respective places in the socket (so the aux was pins 3,4 and 10 and the original wires that were there, back into 5 and 11). Stereo worked fine but no Aux option comes up????

I'm sure mine was a cable pure and simple. I will try to research it later when I'm home. It was purely an added connection, nothing else removed or added. Ill add pictures of my unit too.

Tony.

ps. Did you look on YouTube for videos. Often better than other forums I find.

Right....hang fire @t-tony, as I have ordered another lead from the same lot. This one has a resistor in it (£10.99). If it works, we will know and we will also know where to get the leads from!!!!! I will have it tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed...

My cable wasn't a genuine BMW part (I wasn't going to pay £40 for one where I could get it for much less) but it looked just the same with a plastic pre wired plug which went into one of the connectors in the back of my head unit, and a cable with a 3.5mm socket that I mounted on the centre console. There was no resistors or anything else involved. The plastic hear was quite thick and I had to counter bore from the outside to allow the knurled nut to screw back on to the socket.
Pictures of the screen in my car showing the 4 operations of the "Mode" switch.

Hmmmm! Mine definitely did NOT do that?! I will see what this new lead reveals tomorrow. Do you have Bluetooth and DSP as well as the Nav? Did you need to move the two pins on the back??

No Bluetooth. DSP? The plug came pre-wired ready to fit into the original socket on the back of my HU mate. My car is a 2003. I did buy a lead from a UK seller first and the instructions which he supplied were misleading. I bought a second one from eBay.com while I was in the states which came with clearer fitting instructions.

Yo guys!! Happy days!!!

So....the lead arrived (with inline resistor) and it works a treat!! So to clarify, mine has the Pop Up Sat Nav, the "Premium Sound" system (pre HK days...its as good though if you ask me), so has the Digital Sound Processor (DSP) and mine has the Blue tooth module. I had to switch the pins (the new cable uses pin 3, 4 and 10) and then the existing wires went into pins 5 and 11, where they were before.

It came up straight away. I will finish the install tomorrow (I gout back late today and it was dark....so just wired it in loosely, to see if I would keep it, or throw it down the road in a tantrum!).

Thanks for all the help people....

For info...the ;had cost £10.99 off Amazon. I got the one with the resistor (both leads are the same price). I utilised the BMW plug thats already in the head unit, as the one that comes with it, is a bit of a crap fit. The company on Amazon is "Shine Tec". It's the "Shine Black Cable 3.5mm Female AUX Audio Adapter for BMW Z4 E83 E85 E86 X3 AC291". Thats how it was listed...yes, the E85/Z4 is the same vehicle etc and yes, the listing is a long one. Their reference number/part number is SQBMW-004

Hope this saves somebody some aggro somewhere :)

I'm chuffed...now onto other matters/problems/annoyances with the car :) :)
