Are the pumping stations on the Welland at Stamford and Nene at Wansford still serviceable like when they filled Empingham Reservoir (Rutland Water)? Plenty of space in ER to take some more water on a short term basis
Living memory beats tech any day
Bit like Londinium and the Thames barrier. It was built to stop the sea flooding the effluent metropolis. But as the Thames can only release river water at Teddington for a few hours per day on the ebb tide or flood the effluent metropolis behind the barrier. Over the decades since that idiot Heseltine overruled the building on flood plains at Lower Early to build the largest housing development in Europe post war the reaches on the Thames have gradually been built on leaving nowhere to hold flood water in flood plains that no longer exist. However wot goes around comes around and nearly 50 years later the idiots country pile was flooded, much to his dismay.
The Thames catchment area goes as far north as Nottingham. Floods in Nottingham, used to be 48 hours the Thames reaches would fill. There are 8 reaches along its route to Teddington.
We really have lost our way in this once Great Britain.
Always a clue in names of places. Along the Thames is a posh housing development Cressington Place, that often floods. Its the place water cress was grown over the centuries due to the flow of water from the aquifers in the chilterns providing a constant flow of water that water cress requires. The uproar from those with loads a money, but no sense was laughable.
For many years I lived in the Marlow area, never flooded. Then about 5 years ago my mother's old house was under 5' of water. All those housing developments take a toll.
