when I get around to fitting my coil overs I'm thinking to upgrade the brakes too. Thinking the 3ltr route so can any of you fine gentlemen enlighten me ? Do the larger 3ltr discs fit straight on and what diameter are they. Then I assume I need 3ltr calipers and carriers. Do 330 e46 carriers and calipers fit direct or x5 ? Mine is a 2.8 pre face lift.

I believe you only need the discs and carriers and use the original calipers

Hello @Slam

As Shaun has said, what you require is the calliper carriers and then your choice of discs and brake pads. They will be 300mm discs.

I run Brembo Discs and EBC Yelllow Stuff pads on my 3.0. Works superb and has the required stopping power.

Put e46 330c discs/calipers/carriers on mine. The coupe discs are 325mm diameter and 25mm (I think) thick, 3mm thicker than the original (mines a 2.2) so the original calipers aren't wide enough for the new discs. All a straight-forward bolt on job, hardest bit was getting the Allen screws out of the old discs, resorted to an angle-grinder in the end, bit drastic but it got the job done. Meyle discs and pads off ebay, s/h calipers and carriers from an on-line breakers request thingy, new seals off ebay as well, total cost just under £200, no more than replacing with standard stuff, really.

Looks good , do 17" wheels still fit ? Did the brake pedal stay in the same position as I read changing the calipers lowers the pedal a bit

A tight fit, but room enough. As for the pedal, there's 1mm difference in the piston size, must make a difference but never noticed it. Probably don't have to press the pedal so much, anyway, what with the discs being so much bigger, swept area being further out etc. Only real difference I noticed was slightly heavier steering, must be down to the extra centrifugal force affecting things, not something to worry about. And they've been on over a year now, no problems at all. Bear in mind it's the 330 coupe that has the 325mm discs, others have 300mm.

If you're going to do this I would add stainless hoses as well. In fact I would fit those before increasing the size of brakes.

Tony.
