Hi

I got a 1997 z3 1.9 that has been sitting for a while. The car-turns over and I got a spark but no fuel coming through.
Trying to change the fuel pump relay but doesn’t seem to be in the fuse box.
Can someone point me in the right direction, have I understand right it could be under the dashboard?

thank you

Hi @Adamhan ,

I have had a look in Bentleys and it says underneath LH dashboard.....but this book is based on LHD cars

I have a car in bits at the moment and there are no relays on left side, however there are two on the right side, to the right of the accelerator pedal. ( and bentleys show it next to a clutch pedal ie LHD )

You should be able to get to it just by removing the panel above the pedals. ( You wont have to take it apart like the picture!!!)

If you think the fuel pump relay is the problem, you can swap it with the horn relay as a test. The horn relay is the light green one in the fuse box.

Before you jump into taking under dash covers off, have a look at a couple of fuses first.

Fuse 13, 5A, Hot in run and start. Supplies power to the pump relay coil circuit. Check the fuse. With the key in position 2 and the fuse removed, there should be 12V DC to earth on one side of the fuse base. If there is no voltage, then you have to read the wiring diagrams and work your way back to the main DME relay to see why there is no voltage.

Fuse 18, 15A, Hot all the time. Supplies power to the contacts of the pump relay. Check the fuse. With the fuse removed, there should be 12V DC to earth on one side of the fuse base. If there is no voltage, you need to read the wiring diagrams and Work your way back towards the battery.

I took my Z3 on a drive yesterday and on the way back home the car lost power and after a few seconds of idleing against compression it cut out completely.

My initial thoughts was suspecting the fuel pump, as all electrical was fine and car ran smoothly up and until this event.

Back at home after being towed in a mate of mine had the clarity of mind to enquire about the fuel pump fuse as first check. Low behold, Fuse 18 has burned through. Replaced the fuse and car fired up with first swing.
