Getting black trim back to black

I'm looking for recommendations and advice on what product to use to restore the colour on faded black plastic trim pieces.
I have tried various potions over the years but never been 100% happy.

Armourall - doesn't last

Back to Black - aerosol difficult to control

Meguiars Gold Class trim detailer - washed off leaving a bloom on adjacent paintwork

Boot polish - ruins clothes !


What do you use and why?

Aerospace 303, excellent stuff

Use it on engine bay trim and all plastics.

All I use sir!

The durability is great. It's in a spray bottle.

You can spray it onto a microfibre cloth to apply.

I got 2 small samples of 303 from a detailing guy at Newby last year!
There's 50ml each of the "aerospace protectant" and "quick detailer" in the garage.
Just need some nice weather to get going

I was really disappointed with the Meg's stuff - will post a pic of the bloom that it has created

Yes 303 is also my choice for temporary trim dressing.
For mega durability (1yr+) there is only one product I'd recommend - G-Techniq C4

When you say "temporary" what sort of frequency would you anticipate before reapplication is necessary?
Are we talking days/weeks//months?
I'm looking to restore some trim that is grey (bordering on white) which appears to have been abandoned by the previous owner. Will several coats of 303 produce an additive effect?

Just watched a demo of the G-Techniq C4 restorer http://www.theultimatefinish.co.uk/gtechniq/c4-permanent-trim-restorer.aspx, looks pretty impressive, my wifes Civic has the same problem over the rear wheel arch, been told that this has been caused by someone leaving cleaning chemicals on the car for too long.

So as a warning when you visit someone for a carwash, normally the first thing they do is spray the bottom of the car with a strong detergent and then wander off and do something else, if left for too long before rinsing this will damage/colour plastic trim. Make them rinse it immediatly, or even better tell them not to apply the stuff in the first place. Not sure what the chemical they use is called but it is very aggresive (was told it but forgot).

As I've got some 303 I'll try that first but I think C4 will have to go on the shopping list

Our minibuses are now washed using this treatment and I asked what the "degreaser" was.
Apart from not speaking much english, the guy pointed at several 25L containers that were marked hydrochloric acid
After only 3 weeks I have noticed that the substantial areas of black have gone grey

I must remember not to let them loose on the Zed .........

If used on a daily driver which doesn't get garaged I think you'll be lucky to see past a month. A good thread to feedback on in terms of the durability you experience first hand.

Re the Civic arch trims, try some nut oil or peanut butter - seriously! It has a good restoring effect on uv faded plastics acting like a moisturiser

I could do with something to sort out the crappy looking black plastic on my MINI. Shall be trying the nut oil trick next, as that's the only thing I haven't yet tried short of things like the G-Techniq C4.​

A neighbour uses LHM fluid (Green hydraulic fluid from Citroën) the plastic parts on his cars looks brand new - and the car is 5 years now.... haven't tried it myself though

mmm must be a different brand then - the stuff I used ( Cherry Blossom Ready Wax) dried and didn't come off at all.
