Squadron markings, I think, 145 Sqdn RAF. The aeroplane is currently German owned registration D-FEUR.Whats the marking under the exhaust?
Looks like a Mark IX Mike, but then again I suppose a IX was an updated VIIII saw that one up close a few years ago when it visited Lasham where I used to work. I think it is the only mk viii flying.
Yeah, I read that Mike but I was commenting on the similarities in the likeness really.
I did my school o level history project on the history and development of the Supermarine Spitfire so I'm a bit of a Spitfire nerd I'm afraid.
Someone said that the Spitfire was “the second finest set of curves known to man”!
No prizes for guessing the first! Have to say I totally agree.
Sorry to be “nerdy”, but I believe that the MkIX Spit was actually an interim (but amazingly successful) quick fix version needed to combat the FW190 which was outclassing the MkV.
The MkVIII was actually the next planned development after the MkV with refinements such as retractable tailwheel etc. I’m struggling to remember the other features, but they were of significance.
Hence the number being earlier in the sequence. They do look very similar indeed though.
A lot of MkVIIIs went out to northern Australia to fight the Zeros etc.
