Hi guys,

Like to introduce myself. I haven't been involved much with the forums but I know you guys probably know the most about the m roadster. I've been looking to sell the car soon and would like some advise on setting the price to list it at. What do you think I can get for the car? I've babied the car for the last 3 years and enjoyed working on her but I don't have the parking space to keep her. Here's a summary of the car.

2001 BMW M Roadster s54
Mileage: 33,465
Recent repairs
timing belt, ac belt, driver seat Spacer Replace, Steering Fluid, New steering pump,
Upgrades:
Rear 18x10 Front 19x8.5 Speed Line 3piece Alessio Wheels
Lowered On VogtLand Sport Springs
Lightwerkz D2S 4.0 Projector Lights
Alpine 6x10s and Amplifier. 2014 Kenwood Head unit(forget the model)
New M Technik Steering Wheel
Resonator Delete

Car is in excellent shape and deserves to be treated well with a new owner. So what do you guys think?
What price should I list at? Thanks.

Looks a great car!
Welcome to the best Z forum there is.
Low mileage should fetch a premium.

:welcome:to the forum from West Cumbria. Nice looking Zed. The wheels are a niche choice so may limit the market and from a detail point of view the engine bay needs a good clean including the slam panel and washer bottle. Being at the top end of the Z3 market buyers would expect the engine bay to match the external shine. Great colour though

Hi and welcome from me in Scotland :welcome:.
Your zed has a really nice colour combo
Your low mileage should make it desirable one of the other US forum members may be able to help you better with price .
As many of us are in UK where prices will be different.
I would look through your local listings see what sort of money they go for then probably pitch it up towards the top end .
If it's like UK there will be one or two that are listed at silly money they are not likely to sell like at the moment in uk cheapest on autotrader is just under £ 13k dearest is £54k .
Stephen.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the productive comments! so just clean the engine bay? you guys see anything else? If we are looking at $24,800 for 47 miles. I'm thinking of listing it at $27,500? Wheels were pricy. are they not going to help? light work was pricy also! thought the Xenon setup would help. Will listing it on BAT be worth it? I tend to stick to local buyers. Thanks again.

Jon, in 2014 I took a trip to the UK to meet several of the forum members. They received me well and treated me like family. I had a 1996 1.9. Z3 in Boston Green. While I was in the UK, several of the members (@miller1098 and @board and others) took me for a ride in their Z3 ///Ms. I was extremely impressed with the car. I loved my 1.9l as it was fun to drive and was a good looker but I couldn't get over the performance of the ///M. When I returned to New Jersey, I spent MONTHS on the internet looking for one that I liked. I found it in San Diego, California. I called them and made them an offer, which they accepted, and one of the forum members came over from Wales and helped me drive 3200 miles back to New Jersey. (See:

Sorry for the font. I copy and pasted it from the article. My point is that you are offering a car for sale that is a rare item. People all over the country will be looking for it. Don't limit yourself to local buyers when there's a whole country that's your marketplace. And possibly others from outside the country. You never know where your buyer is coming from......Frankie

so i go to inspect the car from a potential buyer and while driving it to the inspection M roadster decides to have a leak in the transmission seal. so they find a new leak where the transmission and the motor meet. have any of you guys had this problem? the clutch is depressed and i can’t put the car into gear now!

I'm not quite understanding what you're saying. Are you telling us that it definitely is a leak from the transmission side and not the engine? Sometimes the rear main seal on the crankshaft begins to leak. The oil drips down to the bottom of the bell housing. If you inspect the fluid from the leak and it's transmission fluid, then it's a transmission seal. If it's engine oil, then it probably is the rear main seal. These seals take a lot of abuse from the engine and drive train. To replace them, you have to separate the trans from the engine. Then the flywheel, the rear main housing bolts then the rear main crankshaft seal. I've never done on a Z but on other vehicles. If you normally work on cars, you can do it yourself. It's not rocket science but it is a pain in the tail. Otherwise it can cost several hundred dollars. The part itself isn't expensive, it's the labor..................Frankie

Also, you said you can't put the car into gear. You've got me on that one. If the rear main seal is leaking, it can soak the clutch plate making it almost useless. You might get it into gear but there's no friction between the pressure plate and the flywheel. If you actually can't shift it into gear, then perhaps @t-tony can give another reason for the failure than what I've mentioned above..........Frankie

Sounds to me like the clutch slave cylinder has blown. The fluid will leak out of the bottom of the Bell housing and would result in not being able to select a gear?

With those symptoms, I would go straight to the slave cylinder. Have you checked the clutch fluid level?

There's always the chance that something mechanical may have broken allowing the slave enough travel to pop the piston right out.

Tony.

Maybe if you saw a picture of a clutch master cylinder and a slave cylinder, you would have a better idea of their function.

in this picture, the master clutch cylinder is on the bottom and the slave cylinder is on the top. The bottom unit is attached to your clutch pedal by the ring. The center piece that looks like a tube is where a hose that is attached to your master BRAKE reservoir is attached. When you depress your clutch pedal, the ring on this unit, which is a ram or piston and is normally pulled out of the master clutch cylinder by springs attached to your clutch pedal, is pushed back into the clutch master cylinder pushing the fluid which had entered the cylinder when the ring/ piston was pulled out, out the opposite end or the left end in the picture. There is a hose attached to that end that goes through the firewall. The other end of that hose attaches to the slave cylinder where you see the threaded hole. There is also a bleed valve like the one on a brake cylinder. The rod on the right end of the slave cylinder activates your clutch throw out lever and create pressure on your pressure plate to release your clutch disc. What has happened, possibly, is the the rod on the slave cylinder no longer works. This means that it doesn't release your clutch so you can shift smoothly. If you look at the slave cylinder, you'll see two holes, barely visible in this picture, on the mounting plate. There are 2 threaded studs on your transmission bell housing that go through these holes and 2 nuts tighten the slave cylinder in place. A replacement unit would replace yours. They'd have to remove the bolts and the hose and install a new unit, bolting it on and attaching the hose. They would have to bleed the system to get the air out. This can be tricky but a mechanic who knows the system shouldn't have any problem. Sorry about the long winded explanation but it seemed to me you weren't sure how everything works, If you have and questions, I can PM you my phone number and you can call me. One bad thing is that when the slave cylinder goes bad sometimes it's not long before the clutch master cylinder goes, but not always. It's a nasty job to replace that................Frankie
