:welcome: to the Forum from West Cumbria. I'd check all rubber hoses that route air as a start as it's free. Often cracks in the rubber air intake system. Next would be to plug a code reader in or you'll be guessing at the issue.

If the EM light has one on you need to get a code reader hooked up to it to read any/all stored trouble codes. Best guess is the inlet cam position sensor has had it. Possibly been changed for a cheap aftermarket item which are worse than useless.
Where are you located.?, it’s possible there is a member close by who may be able to help with a code reader. Owning a Z3 almost guarantees you will need one sooner or later so have a look on eBay or Amazon.

Tony.

Welcome! I would second that it’s the cam position sensor. Dead easy to change on the m43 engine..I think the OEM ones were made by Delphi ..but Bosch would work..buy from a reputable parts supplier! . I am guessing from the number plate you are north of the border ..plenty of Scottish members on here who may be able to give you a hand. I recommend the C310+ code reader. You’ll need the round adapter thingy as well to plug in under your bonnet for anything other than reading the engine codes.

Hi and welcome from me. To save you a few quid in the future it’s worth investing in a code reader unless you have a good relationship with your local garage. You can by the Creator C310 for about £65 on Amazon pays for its self. Hopefully it’s not to much of a painful bill from the garage but don’t let them fit a cheap eBay special if it’s the cam sensor.

Don’t get to disheartened I’ve just had something crop up with the wife 2009 1 series I’m sure it’s the nox sensor but going to discuss with the garage we purchased it from.

Welcome and condolences for recent mishap… these cars carry stories with them. Mine has been sharing things all week. Hope it’s resolved soon.
