been wanting a different grill, for a while and come to the conclusion I needed to paint them.

So painted the three colours fine - and masked them individually so I could pIant the black. As the bmw colours paint were 3 days old so should be hard.

So totally gutted after a week efforts - when I pealed the masking tape - and don't know what to do next.

I tried wd40 as I thought it was residue - but no luck. Also the masking tape had no paint on it.

I think leaving it in the sun has caused the issue.

What are the characteristics of base coat and top coat paints?

Shouldn't you have used a bumper (i.e. plastic) primer?

Also I think 2 weeks is probably a more reasonable period of time for rattle can paint to harden.

Yes - maybe too quick drying out in the hot sun - or top coat put on too quickly after primer - or a reaction to the grille plastic? Redo and let each stage dry naturally indoors away from direct sunlight. Hope all works out!

I was waiting 24 hrs between stages - so annoying.

I might get some different masking tape tomorrow at B&Q

And let it dry naturally indoors, wanted it fixed for next weeks car show

It looks like it has reacted with the plastic coating on the grill, I would think that you have applied it rather heavily to cause such a reaction, if it is still soft it will need removing as it will never cure, for future reference, when applying rattle can paint apply light coats only as the thinners is very aggressive.

Ok just read it again and didn't realise that you masked out the colours to apply the black, there has deffinately been some sort of reaction with the glue on the tape.

Sounds about right, too much paint in one go will trap the solvents,
I did mine but didn't like it, A lot of messing about masking
