Went shopping yesterday, it was a bit hot, and she ( the car) was fine. Watched temp gauge and she ran cool. Went to take the car out later the engine was not happy running very uneven. Have an appointment to have it serviced tomorrow but could not resist temptation to have a look. Removed the plugs, small puny things, and I thought it was the plugs but they all appeared alright. Some were loose! Dreading taking out number 6 but look at number 5 coil pack.
Seems to have melted. When I start the car with the coil unplugged seems to make no difference as far as I can tell so is this probably the source of the fault ?

Just had a similar fault with mine, lumpy and only running on 5 so released one coil at a time and the one that didn't make any difference when released I swapped for the next to coil and tried again this is a process of illimination and it was evident that number 1 coil had failed so purchased a new Bosch one from euro car parts (35% discount code!) worked out £19! quick, cheap, satisfiying fix

Got the new coil pack and the garage fitted it while it was in for a service. Got the car back and it was still running badly so took it to another garage. They found there is no spark to cylinder number 5 so looks like a wiring problem to the coil or the DME has a fault. Today I will visit BMW to see if you can buy the wiring loom to one of the coils.

Eventually found the DME was at fault. One BMW specialist wanted me to bring the whole car to them to fix the problem. Cost would have been £100 for transport alone then perhaps anothe £300 to fix the problem. Instead took the DME and sent it to Ecudoctor on Friday. Got it back today and the cost was £247 to fix the ignition chip. Put it back in and now she is growling on all six cylinders again.
