We had a couple call in at work this afternoon in an E89 Z4 with a slight problem. He had started to raise his roof when, after the "boot lid" section had opened the system declined to do anything more. He drove slowly to our place to seek help. Manager came to me because all Z's are the same !! To ask what was wrong as he knew about my Gap-Tech woes. Trouble was I was logged on an M.O.T. so couldn't really help other than suggest reading the owners handbook in case there was a manual override to use. I gave him a forum card and suggested he join if only to help with this problem. Any E89 owners ever had this happen to them, and if so what did you do, in case he calls back tomorrow"

How was he opening the roof, from inside the car by pressing the button or from outside using the key?

It has happened to me when using the key if I don't keep constant pressure on the button.

It happened once from inside the car when the cover was in place but a small object was obstructing the mechanism at one side in the boot.

I managed to sort it myself both times.

Thank you Gail, I'm afraid I can't answer those questions as I had to carry on with the test I was doing and by the time I could get back to him he had left. I hope he left a phone number at work or looks on here.

As Gail said, all you can do is look for obstructions etc. It's possible the the cover in the boot became dislodged by something as the rear cover opened. Best to make sure you're stopped handbrake on etc just to make sure those interlocks aren't preventing it from operating.
How far had it got in the sequence?

I guess you need the full diagnostics to see what each of the many sensors are reporting.
I saw a similar car with the rear section completely open slowly driving in to a dealer a while ago. Not a Z4 though but can't remember now what it was.
I think I have the maintenance document for the E89 somewhere. Will se if I can find it.

Thanks Ian, as I said, I'm not sure if he'll return or even if he was a local so please don't go out of your way mate.
