Inspection message?

Sorry all for another newbie question; I just noticed the inspection service message on my 2004 2.2 Z4 comes on when I turn the key in ignition (I had the car for a week and a half now). It says -50 miles however the trader I bought it from has given me a service booklet and the last one appears to have been in February and at less than 200 miles ago...

They also ticked they changed the diesel fuel filter for some reason so not sure what to make of this all. :)

Is inspection a service or something else? The booklet mentions Inspection 1 and 2. I just had it in at the local BMW dealer (I did not buy it from them by the way) for a couple of other things (they run a diagnostics too) but they did not mention anything about this so I am a bit puzzled...

The Service light decreases with time, if it's just been serviced I would suggest the dealer failed to reset it, ask them to reset it for you (you can buy a reset tool if you do your own servicing). Inspection 1 & 2 are just types of service, 2 being the more comprehensive one.

Andy the Z4s do not have the light count down like the Z3 it gives the mileage to do to next service. I can not see how they have changed the Diesel Filter considering they are all petrol engines. But in reference to the Service the - means you have done X miles beyond the service time.

On Inspection 1 and 2; how do I know which one of the two is due?
Check hat has been done on last service and re-set the counter. It is not that important, there is nothing to do with actual service, this is just timer/mileage counter. If car hasn't been serviced previously or you can't figure out - change oil and filters, check belts and you re good to go!

It doesn't sound like an impressive trader. The Z3 is based on the E36 which had the five green light service indicator. The Z4 is closer to the E46 which is the system you seem to have. I do not know the Z4 but on the E46 the service indicator reset is as shown here:

Not a perfect scan but it is from a Haynes manual.
As for inspection I or II I assume yuo check the sevice book for whichever is due. I abandoned dealers long ago and just service my car annually.

Check the condition of the oil on the dipstick if it serviced only 200 miles the oil will look and smell fresh being a petrol engine, if its dark and has a slightly petrol smell to it the dealer would I suggest may well have told you porkys.

I sold it last year but IIRC you had to hold a button in on the cluster then the result is displayed. It's in the handbook...

Hmmm maybe I'm a bit old fashioned, but a dipstick cant be wrong, not sure I trust electronics that much. The things they do to save money!

Agree totally. Just like a sight glass on an oil tank. Can't go wrong...

Have to agree. The electronic level can read erratically- first it's high, do it again in similar circumstances it's low and next time it's high. Not seen any consistency. I only hope the low level warning comes on high enough so damage is done.

Mine is 2003 3.0 and has a good old fashioned dipstick to check the oil level. Not sure it would be money saving to go with electronic monitoring really. Just copying Mercs and Audis.

Tony.

They removed dispstick? How do you know oil level then? What engine it is?
The Si based model which have the N52B25 & N52B30 engines. You tell the oil level by pressing a button on the dashboard.

All the previous M54Bxx engines have a dip stick.

N52Bxx look like this
