Morning all,

We need to change the instrument cluster in the race car as its got the EEP_1 error, which I gather is not an easy fix. Not having a temperature gauge or rev counter in a race car is proving tricky!

Are the E36 instrument clusters interchangeable? ie can we use one from a saloon, compact or even M3? I know the M3 has a slightly higher rev counter which if it works would be ideal.

Also, if anyone has one that is taking up space on a shelf please let me know!

Many thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt,

There are at least 2 versions of the standard Z3 cluster, sometime 1998 (not sure of the date) there was a change of software in cluster, I am unsure if the 2 are interchangeable. There is a test mode for the clusters, the early clusters have 15 tests and the later clusters have 19 tests. Clusters are usually coded to the car and hold certain information for the car, installing a new cluster can cause a mismatch in the mileage reading between the ECU and the new cluster, this is indicated by a tamper dot but in your case I assume this is not an issue.

Sorry I cannot be of any more help but hopefully some of the info maybe useful , can you keep us updated as to what you replace it with? we can maybe learn something new ;)

Brian
