Intake scoops

I see these things being advertised. They seem to replace part 12 in the diagram below with a scoop to force air into the airbox.


The existing part 12 faces up towards the top of the car. Does anybody know if the aftermarket scoops do anything or why BMW would face part 12 upwards towards the hood/bonnet rather than directly into the air flow.

I've seen various versions of these over the years, I ended up with a knock off of the one below for my 3.0si but never got round to fitting it. Unsure as to how much of a benefit you actually get from one, but paint it a nice bright colour and it'll look nice!
