Hi Guys,

I'm Rob and I have recently bought a 1998 Z3 that had been sat for 11 years collecting dust.

I bought the car as a project because I teach young people how to repair cars who have been permanently excluded from mainstream education.

The boot was stuck so I managed to drill in behind the badge and open it. I've replaced the battery and it is very slow to turn over still. I think the starter has given up as I turn the ignition and nothing. All the lights are on but nothings happening. I've put fuel in it but now I think I need to replace the starter motor. I'm hoping the engine isn't partially sized.
It looks like I have the take the intake manifold off to get to the starter motor, which looks a bit of a nightmare. Being sat for so long I know I'm going to snap things as plastics and rubber becomes brittle.

Any suggestions?

Can I go from underneath to remove it?

Any advice and help would be gratefully received.

Thank you in advance 🙏

You should be able to remove the starter from the top without taking the inlet off. The bolts come from the bell housing side.
