I already pay per mile. What's it called again . . . Petrol !

But you're right (adds excuse to list of reasons to take Zed out for a drive)
I don't think pay per mile will have a major impact on how much mileage people do because it's mostly work related mileage which won't change much businesses will just move those additional costs on so it won't make much of an impact on emmisions it's just a way to recoup their losses on fuel duty lost due to electric vehicles and how are they going to implement such a scheme the costs involved are going to be huge and if they go the number plate recognition route people will just be driving around with someone else's plates on it's one big ugly can of worms it's all getting very big brother

Dont disagree, its all about revenue generation isn't it.

Applying it in 1 city ? Yowsers, don't fancy trying to do that. Cost ! Nationally ? Easy. MOT mileage. Estimate your mileage at the beginning of the year, pay monthly, check the reading at the end of the year, chip in the difference / get a refund.

I'd vote for that if it was INSTEAD of road taxes / duties and everything else. But it will be in ADDITION to, won't it . . .

Govt will really want to do something as the number of lectric cars increases. specially since charging your car on domestic, ie home, electricity is only 5% vat.

I'd welcome a pay-per-mile scheme but can't see it happening - to difficult to monitor and enforce.

Suspect they'll just stick with the C02 approach and simply increase the annual increase until nobody can afford or justify their bit of fun - the rotten bast.......

I read an article back in March ? abour Mr Khan hinting at a pay per mile, or pay per minute scheme to replace the ULEZ scheme.

As more Londoners purchase ULEZ compliant vehicles, the revenue will decrease, which goes towards funding TFL, and also the number of vehicles will increase.
So they will need to raise revenue somehow and also keep traffic levels down to stop congestion. They have been looking at different models around the world, but he said they havent found a sutiable one as yet.

Regarding the LEZ charge, if they really wantd to significantly reduce pollution they would just ban non compliant vehicles, rather than impose a charge and allow the polution in. Due to the high charge they are efectively trying to do it anyway, so why not just ban them completely ?

The Gov. will probably bring in something similar eventually, as they were concerned when we all have EV, the roads will become more congested as we can all drive more due to cheaper running costs. Its not going to be painless, and they probably wont let us get away with paying less
