When I was first bitten by the 'Z' bug I was sitting in Michaels Taverna on the Greek island of Zakynthos having lunch with my wife. Its in the mountains and the roads are great in the right car. Once bitten I decided to get a Z4 and drive down from the UK to the island in the car so the search began. Many hundreds of miles later I finally found the new love of my life.....(I can say that only because my wife's out shopping). During this long search I became amazed at the different attitudes of dealers and the total lack of respect some people have for what is a lovely car and to be honest when laying out in excess of £25,000 I was appalled by some of the dealers and the cars they had for sale.
When I approached my local BMW dealer with my request the first thing the salesman said was "I've never seen a 3litre Z4 but we have a 1.8i in for sale"?
Next off to Preston to look at a 3.0i in Black with white leather seats. When asked what equipment was fitted to the car the reply was "everything". Does it have sat nav then? to which the reply was "no". When I opened the drivers door there was an almost perfect handprint right in the middle of the white leather seat. The salesman looked at me and said "no worries you can get a car valet to get that off for you".
Next to Manchester 'The Car People' to look at a 3.5is. Opened the drivers door to find the drivers seat ripped down the full length of the back of the seat? The salesman said "I never noticed that".
This list of defects and conversations with stupid salesmen went on and I was starting to disheartened about my quest until I spoke to a man in a VW/Audi dealers in Swansea. Andrew is definitely not your typical salesman and I suddenly developed a trust in him that ended in me buying the car over the phone without seeing it? Its the best phone call I ever made and thanks to Andy I now have my Z4. The other advantage as well was that being a VW dealer they didn't know what had been fitted to it so the only things mentioned in the advert are the things fitted to a 3.5is as standard. Now owning the car and using the BMW web site to check my car I find that the only thing not fitted to it is the 'comfort access package' which I can live without.
So here she is and my trip to Zakynthos is back on track.
