Thanks @GazHyde for reminding me about this.

Had an interesting conversation today with Steve (Mr. Vanos) after he had done the work on my car he started it up from cold and listened to the engine with a frown on his face and said "You've got the wrong oil in this" he said. He wasn't wrong I had put 10W/60 (specified for the S54 engine) in at the last oil change being a smart arse thinking the thicker oil would be better for a higher millage car. How the hell he could tell I don't know but he was spot on, I wouldn't do that he said 5W/40 is the correct one (which I had used previously) no worries he said no damage just change it ASAP (well its done 5k since the last change its being done this weekend.

Just don't use Castrol oils he informed me! I had used Castrol Edge :(

Apparently Castrol (and this is his opinion not mine) over time will sludge your engine up, it puts a brown coating over everything that builds up. He says BMW dont use it anymore either?? So I asked him which oils was best he said Silkolene Pro S was about the best oil for the BMW engines again his opinion not mine, but I have ordered the above 5W/40 oil and a new filter from OPIE just in case.

BTW he also said he wouldn't put 10W/60 in the S54 either

It is strange how many "experts" have a down on Castrol. I have always used it from my Triumph days through to BMW and I have never had a lubrication related problem. My E30 which I sold last year had done 235,000 miles on the original engine and the oil consumption was still negligible. I am sure that BMW's change in recommendation to Shell is more commercial than technical.

Never used them. Always use Mobil or what GSF have on the shelf.

In my zone Castrol lost its good name due to unauthorized copies, with terrible low performance, so everybody switched to other brands, trustable as origin. Maybe the original Castrol is still on top of quality, but we will never know, as we don't used anymore .
