I have one of those, very easy to fit. I don't think it makes much difference to performance but it sounds better.

It is the K&N 57i and looks exactly the same. I don't recognise the Kn 570158 number but your link says 57i. The improvement in sound is subtle.

I really want an induction kit as I love the sound they make but I was looking at my 2.8 today and BMW have gone to great lengths to make it a cold air intake, there is not one but 2 cold air intakes on the car, a heat shield with a filter in the engine is just not going to cut it IMO

Correct. You should try to draw cold air from somewhere outside the engine bay - and keep it cold.

The standard system draws in cold air and allows it to warm up by about 10°C as the intake system is not insulated.

The setup in the image draws in hot air from behind the radiator.

Just adding a heat shield will (at best) draw in warm air from beside the radiator.

You can measure the intake temperature using INPA, or by measuring the difference in voltage across the air inlet temperature sensor.
