Picked up a key from Spurs fan in a coupe (Andy), managed to strip it down and transfer the rubber button section to my crappy looking spare key. After reassembling the internals I also fitted the cover strip on the back which had been missing on my key. Big improvement, now this is my main key. Kept the battery and junked the rest as its unique to the original car.
Have to see if Andy can come up with another one so I can refurb the remaining key.

My old key fob was rather worn so I bought a new cover from eBay for a few quid, it's like a new one now, well worth doing
.

I went through the exercise of purchasing some cheap EBay keys which I had hoped to strip and use to refurbish my OEM keys, I realised however when I stripped them that it wouldn't work. The Chinese copies look the same but are completely different one piece construction and the rubber button assemblies aren't interchangeable and of poor quality also. It depends on the style of key fob maybe.

You don't need to buy a complete key Pete, just the rubberised buttons as @Low Rider has highlighted in his post. Just tying to save you some cash ;).

Yes agree the replacement buttons look good and improve the look tremendously, particularly in the images shown.
Only thing for me are the images on the buttons show that they are intended for a car with remote opening hatch. On my keys the RHS small button is for illuminating the interior lights. So for orginality I'd prefer to go for getting a decent second hand key with the correct image. Each to their own ideas I suppose.

Here's mine,it's slightly different to the one in Steve's post as it doesn't have the boot unlock symbol.
