Key starting mechanism?

I'm in the market for a Z3 & going to see a 1998 Z3 56k miles next week…. When I asked the owner if there are any problems with the car his response was “if I keep it I would replace the key starting mechanism as on occasion the key will not turn the motor on. The mechanic said not unusual and not sure if it is the FOB or the switch. Cost to replace the switch approximately $400. It works fine if one turns the key slowly”….

Any thoughts/comments would really be appreciated… Is this something to be concerned with?.... I don't think it is a “walk away” item but would love some feedback… Thanks in advance

There are three parts to the ignition switch, key barrel that the key gets inserted to, electrical switch at the far end of the barrel and finally a aerial that is in the surrounding circle where the key enters the barrel, this reads the chip in the key and if the code is correct releases the starter to crank and start the car.
The electrical part of the switch can be removed once you take the steering coloumn cover off, try fitting a used replacement from one of the breakers on here. If slow turns of the key ensure it works maybe the internal contacts in the switch have worn and turning it slow makes a better contact?

Could be the spinning barrel which thanks to the write up here, an easy fix (on my list too)
