Hi all,

I have Gaz Hydes Z4 in for a correction detail on the paint.
We have a deal going on between us so I'm doing this and he's doing something for us.

I would just like to point out that I don't do this for a living anymore as it took all my time from my family life.
Explaining this as I don't want to step on any supporters toes (ie Chris @Summit Detailing .)
This is purely a labour of love for me now whereas for Chris it's a business.

Looking forward to this as (Sorry Gaz I gotta say) It's minging..=))

Flat paint with a million swirls per square inch...=))
Gaz's mate thought the floor was shinier than the car.........=))

Been asked just to do the Paintwork but will be sorting front & rear lights too.
Leaving interior as Gaz has plans for it,
Wheels being left as there are BIG plans for these although they will be clean before it goes back.
Leaving brake calipers.

There are a couple of deep scratches which I will be sorting out.

So I will update every evening with pictures if anyone is interested.
Next ones will be Monday evening.

Here are a couple to be going on with..

Oh dear,

Pressures on now..........=))

I'm looking forward to it too.
My only problem at the moment is I will be a bit slow as still recovering from my broken back due to my own lack of driving talent...

Gaz you wont be able to take her out when she is completed as you will be to busy keeping her clean. Black is an absolute B--CH to keep clean you can spot the slightest bit of dust and all you want to do is wash it again. I know should of left ours below par got used more then =))

A little update.

Car has been decontaminated with APC and brushes in various and unusual places and is now clean and squeaky.
Posting a couple of pics, Some 50/50s and a finished very small part of the car to see where my combination was taking me.
Oh and a bit of flake pop too

Paint is very hard and some of it will need wet flatting to get some of the deeper scratches out and also some typical BMW Orange peel paint.
More updates tomorrow

Are you going to get Gaz to sign something to say he promises to keep this car in the condition that you get it to then Russ?;) Looking forwards to seeing the finished article.:)

Has everyone finished having a go at my washing skills? :D

Those who have a black car covered in swirls will get what I'm saying. Yes, it looks shiny when clean but I hated looking at the spiders webs all over it. I honestly think my Z4 was cleaned with a pot scourer.

Knew I would need to get it machine polished as soon as I saw the car, but all the panels were straight and all have the original paint on it. It's a 9 year old car, so the paintwork probably is on a par with it's age and a poor cleaning regime. Same reason why I never bothered cleaning my Z3, once it was clean it looked worse because of the swirls and scratches.

I would have had a go myself (having access to a machine polisher) but we all know how hard the paint is on BMWs of this age. It needs to be done way more aggressively than I would have the skills for, and I'd probably end up down to the primer. Was saving up for a pro to do the work, when Russell contacted me.

Once it's back it will be kept cleaner more of the time (but it is a daily work commuter), and I'll be getting the cleaning kit back out of storage. No more trips to the local hand car wash!

Gaz you are absolutely right. Black is a pig to clean, they look great swirl free but just try keeping them that way. Ours stands outside all year and even rinsing snow foam and rinse you will still have bits of dirt on the car when you use the first bucket to wash it. As soon as you put the micro mitt on the car it will be contaminated

With the right approach/methods for safe washing, a decent sealant, wax or coating for protection, not to mention time there is no reason that a paint corrected car can not be kept that way. Having said that it is inevitable that you will pick up the odd defect over time given the hands on nature of car washing (usually found on side skirts and rear bumper).

In the past I had a run of 6 black cars, including a Z4 which were all paint corrected (obviously!) and none needed a machine polish after a year of weekly/twice weekly washing, even to my mega OCD eyes - testament to proper washing in a methodical manner and a degree of common sense.

I could quite easily host a detailing meet where we'd spend a day solely talking over and demonstrating proven safe methods and products.....it is after all the most important area of Detailing (imo).

cheers

Chris

That's a great offer Chris but any words of wisdom for those a bit too far away for a get together? JIM
