My M44 has a whirring noise when I first start her up, this goes after a minute or two, but it is getting more and more prevalent.
Once warm there are no issues with the engine running.
I would say it was coming from the front of the engine, so I'm thinking it is something connected to the 'Serpentine' belt?
The engine has now done 111k miles and as far as I know nothing much has been changed.
So I am thinking of getting the belt and the water pump replaced at the moment. Just for maintenance reasons if nothing else.
I remember queuing to get into Vanity a couple of years ago she was running really hot, so i think it's best to do the water pump anyway.

Has anybody else come across cold start noises on their 1.9s ?

Does it have a smog pump fitted? If so disconnect the cable to the pump and try it.

Tony.

Mine started making a whirring noise last year after I came back from a tour of Scotland. It needed the alternator changing, so did that, and whilst the belt was off I could hear the bearings in the tensioner when I spun it by hand. I took that off, removed the dust cover one side, checked that the bearings were all there, packed it with grease and replaced the cover. I repeated this on the other side and the whirring noise is all gone. It's the sweetest it's sounded since I bought the car 5 years ago!
I only "refurbed" the tensioner because Eurocar parts gave me the wrong part and I couldn't be bothered to take it back!!

Mystery solved.

I had a power steering fluid leak and my p/s pump was running dry.

Leak fixed and fluids topped up, also changed my aux belt at the same time, so that probably helped as well.
